I'll add to all the other comments about how great this mug is. I got one a few years ago and quickly realized that if I put my coffee in at full temperature right after brewing that it was still too hot to drink at the end of the day. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but this mug really is that efficient at heat retention. I burned my mouth a few times when drinking coffee in the afternoon that I'd poured into the mug at 6:30am. You really can't tell how hot the contents are by feeling the outside of the mug. It will get a little warm around the edge of the lid, where the least amount of insulation is and thus the greatest heat transfer, but I'd pick it up after leaving it in my cold car all day and the metal body would feel cool to the touch while the contents were still piping hot.
I also became very comfortable locking the mechanism and throwing the mug in my bag with laptop, papers, etc. since it never leaked. One caveat is that if you take a drink and close the lid while some liquid is still in the top spout area, that little bit of liquid can leak out from under the locked cap. I never had anything leak out from inside the bottle part though.

Price differences asside, My Zojirushi mug is honestly the best mug i've ever owned. It keeps your drinks warm for such a long time that I honestly stopped using it for things like work unless I keep a second cup at work to pour it into. Otherwise you'll be scalding your mouth on that coffee you made at 7am, even after you returned home from an 8-10 hour shift. You could alternatively add maybe half an ice cube (or more if you're into that kind of stuff) so that it cools down to a drinkable temp.
Cleaning isnt too difficult, but you're not going to be cleaning it with a sponge. You need a bottle brush to get in there. The lid breaks down into 3-4 peices thats easy to take appart and put together.

I take the rubber ring off and make sure I'm cleaning the divot on the inside that might hold a drop or so of liquid. As for the top rubber bit, standard hot water and soap usually does it . My roommate was not taking his rubber ring under the cap off to clean and he noticed a smell.
I have to say that the only thing I use mine for is coffee so I haven't run across this as a problem to be honest. I can understand the rubber seal holding A slight scent of coffee but for me it goes unnoticed since that's what's always I'm the mug in the first place.
Sorry if this was not nearly as helpful as you hoped lol.

For stuff like silicone gaskets you can try soaking in a water and baking soda slurry. I have done this with a dry sack that had gotten smelly and it got the smell out.

I just didn’t need this larger 16oz size so didn’t join the last drop. However, I did end up buying the smaller 12oz one soon after that and can attest to the amazing thermal retention of the product. 12oz is the perfect size for a single cup of coffee and is extremely portable. And I typically quick-sip throughout the day (sustained release 😉) and keep the lid closed. The coffee is still hot for at least 4-5 hours and warm for the rest of the day. Simply love it.
UPDATE: One drawback with the glossy brown one that I have - it chips easily. I have spots around the base where it has hit the sink too hard while washing. So I really wish these had a tougher coating. Other than that, it great.

I'm on my second of these. They're great. Never had a leak, and it is nicely efficient at holding temperature. The first one went to the great coffee shop in the sky after it landed head-down, open, on concrete from my roof. I don't recommend doing that, but otherwise, thumbs-up.

This price looks to be ok -- not great given the wait, but not bad.
Great purchase.
WARNING: THIS WILL KEEP YOUR DRINKS UNBELIEVABLELY HOT. I'M NOT EVEN JOKING ITS RIDICULOUS.

Just a heads up - These are NOT made from stainless steel, and the inside of the mug will rust after only a few months.

This is the second one that I got from Amazon, the first had the same exact issue of rust staining on the inside all the way around. I wash and dry after every use, and yet here we are.

Ok, so you, and possibly the OP, have these “SlickSteel” versions. I suppose if you are aggressive about cleaning, or use abrasive methods, you could damage or remove the coating down to the bare metal.
Rust is still suspicious. Stainless Steel, while it can occasionally ‘stain’, shouldn’t experience the prolific rusting that the OP shows.
Below is Amazon’s description of the SlickSteel process. Even so, I much prefer the Teflon coating that mine has.

noisyturtleThis is crazy. I dont know whats going on with yours but mine which i've had for a minimum of 4 years has not rusted. Mine is not teflon coated (it doesnt have that white colored inside) and I have never had a rust concern. I dont know why yours ended up the way it did. I would definately inquire about that since i've never seen anyone make this complaints on all the forums i've seen. The level of rust on your mug is really suspicious and im curious what happened durring production that might have resulted it in being so prone to rusting like this.
Generally speaking though, these mugs are top notch. I wrote up a review of them in one of my previous comments here. They keep your beverage so hot that you cant drink it until your work day is over, and they come appart making cleaning easy. 100% recomended.
Best vacuum jacket mug there is. Specifically this version, with the wider cap and polished stainless steel interior. The one with the smaller cap suffers from excessive splatter every time you flip the cap open. Even worse, the coated interior absorbs the aroma of whatever you poor in it, and it's practically impossible to neutralize.

TherocCan confirm the splatter on the 12-oz, but honestly it’s so minimal; meh.
Haven’t noticed an odor but I only ever use it for coffee. Coffee oils are pretty potent and can be difficult to remove, especially if you fancy a dark roast (blech!).

As other have said great mug you can't go wrong with this or the newer wide mouth version( I prefer the wide). I have to take the top off to let anything hot cool down enough to drink.

I paid the same price for the smaller, 12-ounce version of this travel mug on Amazon a few weeks ago. Works great. Filled with espresso, threw in my backpack to take to a gig -- perfectly hot hours later and NO drips/leaks. The locking mechanism is ironclad. Might need to pick up this larger one too.
