From Zwilling, a German company that’s been making high-end cutlery for almost three centuries, these damascus knives set a remarkably high standard. Crafted from 101 layers of damascus steel with a Super Gold (SG2) core, they look as good as they perform Read More
Ok. Got my three Zwilling Kramer knives tonight - 1x10" Chefs Knife, 1xParing knife, 1xBread knife.
There are no real flaws or defects on the knives that I could locate, other than a couple of VERY small scratches on the bread knife's wooden handle (but these weren't noticeable). The original retail boxes were all in great condition.
So thank you MassDrop (I'm serious)! I got three Damascus ZwKramer knives at a huge discount, all of which arrived in clean, near-perfect condition (boxes AND knives). This is one of the best deals I've ever gotten, so thank you!
(p.s. PHEW! I was dreading that this would turn out much worse)
Here's a couple of pictures:
1. I already had a 10" ZwKramer Chefs Knife (bottom knife) that I paid full retail for, so it's easy to compare the two chefs knives. There were no issues with the MassDrop 10" Chefs Knife (top knife):
mindbender9The ZwKramer Paring Knife (which I really wanted) is perfect. No imperfections or defects on either the box (not shown) or the knife itself.
It's a good thing I didn't buy any extra as a gift, the box came all messed up, just like the other photos.
The cardboard holding the handle was all messed up and the point was sticking out of the box.
Also on closer inspection of the knife edge it looks mine has minor corrosion/water spots on it.
Shame it came like that but would have been great if we got a heads up on the condition of the knives.
The price sure makes a lot more sense given the condition, and I still would have bought it knowingly, but shady practices gives me less confidence in MD.
Did anyone receive a perfect condition knife like the photos that MD took?
Just wanted to let everyone know massdrop just responded to me saying these knives dont have maufactures warranty but if you look on zwilling they are lifetime warranty. They also said they do not sell factory seconds unless noted and ive been in this for awhile only factory seconds lose there warranty this is epic bullshit
@Irishedgeworks - Thanks for the update. Can you let us know what issues were found on your knife so that I can locate any when my order arrives?
Also, what did you have to do to send your knife to Zwilling for servicing? Thank you for updating the group on your findings - most appreciated!
I have emailed Zwillig on such issues and they have replied saying:
"...for future reference, you can identify one of our “seconds” products by a dot on the blade near the logo. (These items are generally only sold directly by Zwilling at a significant discount. The visual imperfections do not affect performance, and the products are warrantied against manufacturing defects just as full-priced items are.) If you would like to return/exchange your knife, you will have to work with the seller/retailer."
Look for that dot. If it's the case that these are indeed seconds with dots but they have been sanded away or something before shipping then that's pretty darn fishy (not saying they are or have been but just hypothesising).
PotatomI haven't received my order yet, but does your ZwKramer Santoku have that dot near the logo? I'm wondering if any of the received knives have that dot.
Thanks!
I also think we got sent seconds. I myself ordered the santoku. Fit and finish was not as good as I thought it would be. Part of the damascus pattern on mine near the handle just looks...not right. Bolster also has a lil gap. Tad disappointed.
PotatomHi,
I have got the Santoku and mine also has same gap at handle and the pattern is little off near the handle exactly like the pics you have shared, i believe they are from same batch and got little defects on them, My rest of the products looks ok and some blades were dusty so i had to clean them, Thanks for sharing.
Dark_KnightZwillig got back to me and said:
"The small gap in between the blade and bolster is actually within manufacturing specs (to allow the otherwise very hard, rigid knife to move a bit and prevent breakage)."
IrishedgeworksOh crap. That wouldn't be acceptable for a $450 knife (retail). It looks like others are reporting imperfections that Massdrop may have forgotten to mention.
Is there a warranty that Zwilling would honor for repairs since there was no mention of imperfections or flaws in the Massdrop offering?
I just received my knife today. Everything came in perfect condition. This is the most expensive knife I've ever paid for. I almost didn't join the drop. The knife is stunning and razor sharp. It is well balance and really nice to hold, even with my small hand. Just can't wait to try it out this week. Cheer.
Jonathan-LeWhile I'm happy that you've received your knife already, can I ask you - How did you receive it so soon? I'm expecting my package to arrive 7/6.
mindbender9This question is for Massdrop to answer. As you can see, several peoples already received their knives too. So I guess first comes first serves ?
My knife arrived today. I really like it, but I'm a bit disappointed with the packaging. It's held in place with some flimsy cardboard, and it came loose in the box and the finished looks like it was scuffed from rubbing on the box. Part of the logos were worn away. I'm not sure if there is anything to do about it, or if I should write it off and consider it as getting a factory second at this price.
bnard893I comeing to the realization that these are all factory seconda which all have small flaws mine has scuffs on the bladw and a cracked mosiac pin. Packageing was also horrible tip of my santoku was sticking out of the box. This is utter bullshit that they tricked all of us
been 'shopping' around for a damascus for 8 years. . saw this, immediately jumped on the santoku, and am so fucking excited. it's already shipped and slated to arrive by the 24th. love at first sight.
