Then there is ergonomics. Having the number pad on the right and the mouse on the right as well means your right arm is way out there which is really hard on your shoulder. Moving the mouse or the number pad to the left makes since here.
Finally, you have keypads, what makes a number pad good is often not the same as what makes your keyboard good. The switches and keycaps may need to be different. You can also push it out of the way.
Personally I would like to see a keyboard with the number pad in the middle.
