I've honestly always wondered why would one need an automatic knife. I know it's to deploy a blade automatically, but why would you need to, outside of military situations?
I don't believe in the 'self-defense' explanation either as 99.999999% of people won't ever get into a knife fight.
So what's the real use, besides the coolness factor (that I get). Not trolling, I'm really wondering how come these are so popular. Especially when manually opening a knife is a ritual that is so pleasing to the senses.

BobrazI agree. I've never, aside from cool factor, preferred an automatic over a manual. I've got midteks that deploy faster than most autos (although maybe a midtek auto would be faster) and I find them more satisfying. Plus, traveling for work, if I've got a 3 inch blade on a folding knife that's not assisted, I'm good throughout the whole United States.

BobrazNot the biggest fan of autos like the kershaw launch. I dont really see the use either. Although i would love to own an OTF because they are so different. Sadly they are illegal in my country

BobrazMy opinion is that while majority of those who want them really just try to defend their want there is little to no real reason to have one over a standard folding knife. There are some people who they can benefit either due to profession or physical limitations. Self defense is a flimsy excuse for auto knife in part due to the fact there are faster no auto options for deploying a blade.

BobrazAn "active" youth has lead to some hand issues. On the bad says, the kershaw launch 2 makes life a lot easier doing simple tasks. Otherwise, the fat back is my edc.
