So this is now a thing, https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/80qyvs/ic_hyper_7_r2_pcbs/ I wonder how many sets I would need to cover that...

yanfaliI am all about full-size, but this might just be too full for me.

Why are the top two rows using POS - 2 mount keycaps (two switches for one 2U)? Seems much easier (and cheaper) to just use one switch, a stabilizer, and a standard 2U keycap for each one.

dvorcolIt sure is an impressive board. Apparently the Hyper 7 was designed by 7bit and only a prototype was made. I honestly have no idea what I would do with such a behemoth other than mount it on the wall and look at it's majesty.

yanfaliThis is modeled more after the original Symbolics keyboard that the set was designed after.

It also provides a platform to really showcase the full Space Cadet Round 5 set, as it was a MASSIVE buy unlike anything Massdrop (or anyone else) has gotten close to doing as far as content. Just a super cool board/set with a really great history behind it :D

dvorcolIt's a great board to display that set you bought where you got the base plus EVERY add-on kit available, paid several hundred dollars, and waited 18 months! Gotta do something while you wait!

yanfaliCan you share a link to Chyrosran22's review? I read the Wikipedia entry, that was very enlightening.

originalritzEvery buy we (the community) used to do took almost a year+ to do before places like MD. I've definitely waited 2 years for some caps to arrive from old buys. Waiting for a long while is just how it was, never really minded it.

livingspeedbumpAnyone know the reason behind POS in the top two rows of the Hyper 7? I thought about the possibility of alternative layouts, but this would contradict the original inspiration.

yanfaliYep that’s my H7 board. Oblotzky has confirmed that this won’t be part of the options kit. I’m running an R2 for the PCBs tho

dvorcolThe caps are 2u and require 2 switches - this was because they were special functions and therefore should be firmer to press. Additionally they are more stable than with stabilisers which is great for SA style caps

Jae-3sotericAh, that explains it. You probably know that stiffer switches are available for this type of situation, but I had no idea that POS felt better than stabilizers with 2U keycaps. Actually, I was imagining POS would feel worse - kind of tippy. Just curious, did you wire both switches in parallel for each keycap, or just one?
It is an awesome piece of work, I hope you get enough interest to run a GB!

dvorcolYeah I’m aware there are different weight switches - this one wasn’t my first Custom keyboard!! Only one switch is required to be wired but the features of all the keys are there (9 layers and 8000 functions)

Jae-3sotericWow. For several semesters in college I earned some extra money typing up the solutions manual for a thermodynamics professor's text-book-in-progress. It was a ton of work with a standard keyboard. Provided the software could use it, a keyboard like this would have really come in handy!

I just got a Hyper7 r1 PCB.
I'm psyched to design a case for it (this is going to be one heavy mother - need to have a shop cut it because my mill is too small.)
I fear I'm never going to get a full r6 set. I'll figure out what to do about that when the case is closer to done, because I doubt I'll find someone sitting on a full set who wants to part with them.

John_McCormickThis was bought second hand off mech market. It was part of my original run with one of the guys that was in my team. I have a round 2 up on geekhack right now

j.a.lHi mate. I’m the runner of this original round of PCBs and I’m sorry you paid the price you did for this. I have some measurements for a wood case the same as the one in all my pics and also we have alu casedesigns for the R2 PCB which will be corrected to have 3 rows on the top instead of 2. Additionally we are also correcting how to connect the two pcbs as the traces are reversed on R1 leading to some tricky wiring challenges, and the mount points will be fixed as well. If you want any advice or the qmk fork for the PCB do hit me up on Reddit or deskthority as I’m not sure the seller shared any of this with you and panic sold knowing the T2 GB was happening (which I fully appreciate).

j.a.lAs far as I know there are only 4-6 full sets and I know of thred owners and 2 part owners. That being said I’m looking at a dcs keycap set to fit as well.

Jae-3sotericRe: the price - I knew it was high, but not that round 2 was happening and so figured it was likely my only shot at it. So I was suckered a bit; I'm not that terribly concerned about it[1].
I'll ht you up on DT - absolutely would love to talk about various things. Thanks for the info!
[1] To others who watch /r/mm for rare things, a tip: when one comes up, check around and see if a new round is happening. This has happened before, although the first time to me.

DogFort@Jae-3soteric is running the interest check right now, so he would be in the best position to answer specifics. I think there's enough interest that there will probably be a GB, even if it's just for art 😁
