Also, K7XX or 6XX? I love the looks of the first but I've had only good experiences with Sennheiser.
recommendations in price ascending are emu purple hearts (on here 80$), shure 215 (arguably the best starter iem runs about 100$ but Ive seen them down to 60 on sale), Massdrops Noble X is a good set in the 250$ range or you can get the wizard tuned ones for a bit more (he’s a beast so I’d definitely recommend springing the extra cash) and finally the Sennheiser momentum is a nice midrange set of overheads. (Make sure you get the newest generation as I know they frequently improve on this set.
Sourcing is another interesting topic. If going from your phone I can say the audio quest dragonfly is the most convenient and provides a noticeable improvement over most any onboard DAC. That being said if you’re on anything but iphone I vastly preferred the Dacport from centrance. Much wider stage and richer sound, but I could never get it to work on my idevice.
This mostly covers the lower-middle range as this rabbit hole goes really really deep. (I’m waiting on a set of 900$ IEMs from massdrop - looking at you @bradr ) so if you have any questions feel free to reach out.
Thanks for the headphone recommendations, I'll look into the ones I don't know yet. I've had a wayyy better experience with Sennheiser 461Gs than the Momentums. The earpads are really stiff but it didn't bother me much once I got used to it.
I can't imagine spending $900 on an audio set up yet. All that money being taken away from keyboards!
If you ever save up enough, I’d recommend the PM-3s (Oppo is going to discontinue it soon though) or the new P7 wireless (not the wired originally p7, the new wireless p7 has better sound revisions).
