I'm looking for something more like the nikon d3300, I just need some reassurance and possibly some advice on refurbished vs not?

JonnyJI'd look into the Olympus OMD-EM5, there's a new version out so you can find it for pretty good prices used. I bought mine a year back for around 500 CAD with the 12-55mm pro lens. One advantage is it's weather sealed with any of the pro lens' and good lens selection with the m4/3 system.

JonnyJWhy not just snag a used Nikon D7000? Plenty of resolution for most prints, not archaic but not overfilled with frivolous features, and better build quality than the lower end of Nikon's crop sensor offerings?

JonnyJRefurbished is fine, provided the factory is carrying the warranty on the repair work. Purchase from a reputable seller and double check warranty and refund terms (should you find a major flaw out of the box).
I have a collection of nice Canon L series lenses so I tend to buy older refurbished Canon bodies from Amazon, Adorama, B&H and the like.
