Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. ETA: now I emailed Kono store to see what they say about the box royals. If it will not be safe I requested Cherry Browns. They have limited selection for non Kailh brand switches. 😂
ETA 2: I got my request to change to Cherry Browns approved. Here is what Alec told me:
”I'll swap that over for you. Can you ......[edited unecesssary confirmation stuff].....your Kono order? It doesn't affect Kira's stock keycaps, but other sets may or may not be affected depending on their tolerances. Regards, Alec”
Hope this helps others in a similar situation as I am. If you ordered kailh box with your Kira, you can still change your switches. Massdrop still hasn’t replied in the Tokyo60 drop for those of us who ordered kailh box switches what they plan to do.
