Note the NEW Model GPS GPSMAP® 66st which replaces the GPSMap 64, please re-vote for the new model as its similar price and it would be frustrating to end up with a Massdrop for the OLD model
Id say the inreach by garmin. I have the mini and its a powerful tool in my pack. The big brother is heavier but much more powerful!
I'd love to have a *2 way* satellite messenger w/ GPS & topo maps... and the ability to set custom locations (like TackleTom requested for fishing holes) to saved dispersed camping spots, etc. Minnesota has a very large area with zero cell reception (larger than just the BWCA wilderness), it would be nice to send a daily A-OK message without the false alarms that the Spot messenger causes (nothing like S&R dropping down from a helicopter to interrupt your romantic lakeside dinner...)
I would love to know a good gps that I can make trail marks or just "drop pins" when I go out fishing to mark where I catch or get bites. I usually go out to sea on the east coast, from OBX, NC to Cape Cod. I don't really need anything more than accurate marks. Meaning, I don't need ocean maps/depths and whatever. Will a trail or etrex do that?
ive been using garmin edge devices for about ten years now and love them so much more than all the other types out there. they weight less, are smaller and usually have really good battery life, especially with the backlight off. using an edge touring now. but my edge 605 is still going strong and will double as backup on longer trips, though after 6 or 7 years im sure the battery is going to start declining soon. all of these do the same things that the etrex's do, depending on the map level you load them with.
why is everyone going nuts over the GPSMap64 when the eTrex 10 and 20 are so much more dope and have better battery life
I've been doing some geocaching with my kids, and have been using the app on my iPhone. Unfortunately, the GPS accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. In addition, I want to acquire a handheld GPS for backcountry hiking and tracking. Garmin and Magellan both have models that I'm interested in. Does anyone have experience and insight they'd like to share?
