Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?
Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

Slavery was popular you know. Not exactly a good thing
My Razor Kraken Pro was replaced under warranty and then still did not last a year between the original purchase and the replacement. Though I had on-ear headphones from childhood that still worked. This is the biggest issues with gaming products: Consumers move on and move forward, therefore product durability is not a highly valued aspect. I thought I was buying a premium product, but my experience was not supporting the product experience.
Durability is highly valued for me, regardless of enjoying video games versus other media and entertainment. Durability means I get value for the money I spent over a longer period of time. I drove a Mitsubishi Mirage I bought for $1,000 for roughly 100,000 miles. It's durability was able to have me in a car at the cost of 100 miles a dollar.
So I needed a durable and good quality head set. I researched for months on purchasing my next set of headphones. I made a list of "features" I wanted. Over-ear, mic, durability, comfort, and replaceable cord were on the list. As I researched I found a very big difference between cost for headsets and headphones, though the mic on my previous gaming headset was pretty terrible. I began to add weight to the different qualities, this is when I began to realize that the mic was not so high on the list. It was more important that I spend the money once, and have a set of cans I can enjoy with my laptop watching a movie, or at work listening to music, or at home gaming on the pc.
This is where I believe you are mistaking the needs and wants of the consumer. You are using an obviously more educated mindset toward audio than me, to address why M50x's are not great for gaming compared to other headphones in the same price range. You are valuing simply one aspect, which you understand, from your viewpoint of being a super enthusiast. While many more individuals are more akin to my mindset, simply trying to get educated enough to make a great value purchase along the fringe where premium brands meet premium value because of their durability and quality and price create a sweet spot.
Many of us have gaming in our daily grind and use those same headphones for other activities, many of us do not want to spend money on more than 1 set of over ear headphones.
If it was not for my foray into the audiophile community I would have never known the value and quality of the M50x'x I have today.
M50x's are a great quality, great comfort, great durability, and good enough sound for me the average ignorant consumer. I can begin my day by collapsing the unit and tossing em in my bag, then throw my bag in the car and drive to work. At work I wear them while fixing things at my desk sometimes with very loud outer noise from a dremel or bench grinder, but these headphones block out enough noise that I can still listen to YouTube videos or Hulu shows on the computer. Then I throw em in my bag and head home and plug em in to get online and play games with friends while chatting over teamspeak, and watching some movies or shows as well. They make Les Miserables sound great, and they work just fine for first person shooters or mobas. Then I plug them into my phone and listen to ASMR videos as I fall to sleep. They get knocked and tossed around as I toss and turn, till they eventually come off where they may get knocked onto the floor. Then I wake up and do it all again. These headphones house my head for easily 8 hrs a day if not 12 or more, and that does not include however long they last on my head while I sleep.
The M50x was my first step into that audio enthusiast experience and it was awesome enough for me to buy a pair of IEMs about a year later. I got the Shure 215se because the reviews and price point. Though I really enjoy getting an experience that closes me off from the outside, I also enjoy comfort and ease of use. I do not see taking my next step until I have the money and time for researching some custom IEMs. I imagine a day when I can wear IEMs and sleep or nap without discomfort.
I had difficulties with soldering the thin wires and close connections when trying to repair cords on headphones. Do you have any sites you recommend for tips, tricks, tutorials for doing audiophile electronics work? I have toyed with the idea of making a set of these m50x's into bluetooth headphones. You ever check out the components available through digikey?
. There are bigger and likely more powerful on the market somewhere.
