I would definitely go with HM's embody or Aeron since they're generally the cream of the crop. HM has a lot of quality control and whatnot. Both chairs have a pretty interesting mesh fabric that prevents ass sweat. Both require more fine tuning than most people are accustomed but that's what you get with something so specialized and expensive, this is an adult's toy and once you take the patience to get it all together, it's probably the best you can buy. There are claims that you can sit in this chair for as long as your patience and restless legs will allow you; like 13 hours+ straight without ANY complaints. They also last a loooong time. They're typically covered by 12 year warranty which means the manufacturer EXPECTS 99% of them to last that long and past warranty. If you can spare 100 dollars per year then you can afford this chair.
I haven't had much luck with Herman Miller and Steelcase lately. The Fern is the only chair that I can sit in all day without discomfort and back pain.
Surprised that no one here has mentioned the embody. It's expensive, but it really does make working while seated tolerable.
I've been in the high-end commercial furniture industry for my whole career. Done it all, but mainly been in product development. I have launched a number of the chairs listed here. AMA.

Aeron vs Mira.?

The Mirra 2 is a nice improvement over the original version. Not a lot of difference TBH. Mirra 2 has a nicer mechanism and adjustments - Aeron looks a lot better and has all the things you'd want to upgrade over a cheap chair.
Lots of great options in that price range.
Is the Aeron winning on name recognition alone? It is not that great of a chair. In the Herman Miller line the Mira is clearly superior, but for my money it is Steelcase Leap hands down. Herman miller suspension seat pans make cross legged sitting nearly impossible as your ankle will be resting on plastic frame. Steelcase also has superior arm rests.
It is reasonable the Aeron might be in the lead as many people do like them but this landslide is just a joke. It is not that good of a chair.
The Aeron is one of the most uncomfortable chairs I've ever had the displeasure of sitting in. Part of me thinks people just vote for it because they've heard of it before.
I don't understand why everybody thinks the Aeron is better than the Mirra, honestly. I've used both the 1st gen Mirra as well as the Mirra 2 for years and, having tried the Aeron, I can safely say the Mirra is WAY more comfortable and ergonomic.
How many more votes do we need? The bar is full!
I've owned the gesture w/ headrest for ~4 months now. The articulated arms are a huge win (I'm a developer, read/type a lot). I haven't noticed a problem w/ lack of incline; cranking the seat back seems to satisfy that case.
Oh man, I've been saving up for a full kit Herman Miller Aeron. If I could get one at discount I'd pull the trigger immediately
So happy to see a poll for a product like this! Great one.
The Steelcase Gesture lacks a forward tilt. For those of you who like to sit upright/forward, it is not the chair for you. It's a huge oversight by Steelcase, as even cheap $100 office chairs usually have a forward tilt mechanism. Unacceptable in a $1000+ chair. I read that the Steelcase Amia (which is also in this poll) is more vertical, but it still lacks the mechanism.
I second this on literally every point. Lol its funny how remote "work when you want to" remote jobs generally always translates to 12+ hour days. Thank god for Aeron. I'm actually interested in getting the latest one as mine is 2012ish. Not because it's broken or uncomfortable but because I hear there was some pretty nice upgrades made.

can you imagine doing 12+ hours in a racecar bucket seat-looking "gaming" chair? We need to get a chair on this that isn't meant for late teens early 20s.

If I sat in that for 12 hours I would be working at "Foggy Bottom"
The Wilkhahn ON and FS line chairs should have been included in this poll.
While Aeron chairs are comfortable, be warned that the mesh does tend to ruin pants. A bank I worked with threw out theirs when the mesh caused custom made suites to be damaged very quickly. For home use with casual pants they would be great but in a professional space I would look at other options.
Personally I do have a DX Racer as my gaming chair. It was a gift from my wife and would not have been my first choice. It is very firm, more firm than I would normally have selected. Surprisingly, the firmness makes it quite comfortable for long gaming sessions. We also have a Clutch chair in the house. While it has similar styling to the DX Racer chairs it is softer which I find less comfortable.

Sorry, it isn't about 'delicate' pants or not. Everyone at my office in my department is well aware of the sensation that is this chair stealing your butt buttons, and none of us are holding wallets in our back pocket while sitting at a desk all day at work. It's screwed up about 4 pairs of my own pants and at least two pairs of my neighbors, and when it happens, it's announced with a weary sigh of 'another one bites the dust'.
Outside of that, these chairs are quite fantastic, and fairly easy to sit in for hours, and the ventilation is quite nice, especially as I'm typically overly warm.

Herman Miller changed the mesh quite awhile ago to address the abrasion issues.
