I decided on the Garmin inReach Mini - tiny, useful SOS and text-communicator for when you want to have something available and out of the way. If you want to add functionality, it will pair with smartphones/tablets to add mapping, easier messaging, etc. Requires a subscription, but there are several tiers to choose from, including month-to-month and annual options.
been using Garmin in reach for a three months trip and i recommends it to anyone who wants peace of mind to the people bacl at home while away from reception (monthly subscription required).
also whole using a two way coms you know if help is coming unlike PLB which you hope someone received you transmission.
I have Spot. It is useful WHEN it decides to work. around 50% of the time it sends a message, says it is sent, and never actually sends it to the recipient. This as you can imagine is a fatal flaw. I was expecting a single "check in" when i lent it to my brother who went on a long hike. We didnt get the check in and hence worried and lost sleep for 2 days. So I would not vote for SPOT. I will not buy another SPOT. I will try anything else with newer more reliable technology. I still have a live account and will gladly buy something else when one comes up on massdrop., if it does.
I used to have a spot, and now I have the inreach. From personal experience, it's a huge relief getting a text back from emergency personal letting you know they are on the way and being able to exchange info back and forth.
