Why is the jaybird X2 so far ahead ... seems suspicious considering the x3 is also an option and the Bose SoundSports are definitely better at the same price point.

No, I tried the X2 and returned them. Sound worse than $15 quality audio brand wired headphones. That's the problem with BT, all overpriced right now. Although for the gym I use:
