I have wanted an automatic watch for years but I don't have a ton of money to buy the really good ones and just don't know what to trust on the lower cost ones as everyone has a different opinion. Because I am not an expert, that is why I am not suggesting an option. However when I do get an automatic, I want one that shows a decent amount of the movement, gears etc, on the face. If you can only see a little bit, or only see the movement on the back, or not at all, why get an automatic/mechanical? Perhaps I am missing the reason people choose that over quartz? A lot of the watches shown to pick from have little to no movement shown on the face. If all I need to know is the time, I can look at my phone or buy a $30 quartz watch.

Sea-Gull are decent in my experience. Chinese movement mass-producer, but the movements they use in their own watches seem to be well regarded. I have an M182SK, which is a small 38mm skeleton watch and very cheap. Automatic, gains upto 10 seconds a day, power reserve seems well over a day.

...aaand I've only just seen how long ago this comment was posted. Saw the poll pop-up, voted on it then looked at comments without checking when they were posted.
I wish people would actually vote for the SNKL23J watch from Seiko. Talk about a watch that's bang for your buck and a great Intro to mechanical watches.
Seiko jdm are probably the best choices here.
The Waterbury, while handsome, features a quartz movement and doesnt fit the category
