Malveaux uses the maverick audio tubemagic D2 to add a slight warm tube sound to his setup.

The schiit lyr us a hybrid meaning (not positive) it still outputs as a solid state but has a tube buffer before that.

Dang it, because of you I keep looking at the Bh sex as well! :D
I really feel like tubes are the way to go for these. It's not nearly as cost effective comparatively, but it's not that outrageously expensive. I bought the Schiit Lyr to start which is like the entry gold standard for orthos in my mind, but I think that BottleHead SeX would also be great for the HE-500. I was really hoping the SeX would get selected in the Bottlehead drop we had earlier.

http://www.bottlehead.com/store.php/products/single-ended-experimenters-kit
The Emotiva Mini planar solution is more of a 'starter/holdover' option more for HE-4 / Mad Dog -priced models that can be justified because of the speaker option -- might even save you money down the line if you can go passive instead of active. The Lyr -- while nice, capable, and pretty well-priced -- is still just a desktop headphone amp that could be an uncomfortable reach for some people as their 'entry'.

Also, people too often overestimate the 'needs' of the HE-500 model, as it doesn't need something like a BH S.E.x. to get it above its threshold -- it was designed to do well with desktop amps providing just-above-average power. Any entry-level tube options of that power type in the ~$200 range (or lower, for solid state) could really have them functioning at a high level. I have read that they don't benefit much at all past 1wpc (@38ohms).

If you're looking for a BH S.E.x. drop, there was an update yesterday in the Crack drop thread suggesting it might happen in time for the holidays.
