I had a Drobo and the one things to be aware of with Drobo is that the software and formatting is proprietary so if the unit itself fails (like mine did) you will need to replace it with another Drobo unit to keep the data. When the Drobo died I replaced it with an Asustor (by Asus) and have never been happier. Does RAID, has S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and a large app store (all apps are free). It comes loaded with everything you need for a home server/media server. It also doesn't have the hard drive limitation that Drobo's do. If you only need a storage server then a Drobo is great, if you want rsync, Time Machine and cloud backup as well as a personal URL to access it outside of your home network then try the Asustor. Run BitTorrent Sync on it and access your data like Dropbox but without Dropbox. :)
Selected theese due to the "special dynamic raids" they seem to have, i dont think free nas has that ?
Also i dont agree with the priceing, its 841 euro WITHOUT disks....
Drobo is 549....
Added FreeNAS Mini as it seems to be a great piece of hardware and comes pre-installed with the excellent FreeNAS software.
The only reason I don't have one yet is the price.
