Deep Blue traded its fins for wings in 2015 when it launched Air Blue, a Kickstarter-funded brand that consists of more than 20 different pilot’s watches. The Papa Praesto is one of these. You might notice that it shares a likeness with the Modern Fliegerurhr watch, released in 2010 by Praesto. And that’s because it was made in collaboration with this little-known brand. Designed by artist and watch enthusiast Russ Schwenkler, the Papa Presto features a distinct look that includes stenciled numerals on the outer ring, skeletonized hands that lend the watch a sense of weightlessness, and a subsidiary seconds subdial fitted with an orange counterweight.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of six different styles.
The intuitive design of the dial features a textured inner ring with hour markers and an outer ring with minute markers, so that the hour hand points at the hour numerals and the minute hand, the minute numerals. Both the hands and numerals are coated with green SuperLuminova. Protecting the dial is a brushed stainless steel case, atop which sits a sapphire crystal.
The Papa Praesto is equipped with Miyota caliber 8218 automatic movement. This 21-jewel movement, which vibrates at 21,600 beats per hour, offers a power reserve of more than 40 hours. It can be manually wound, though it doesn’t offer hacking seconds. A large screw-down crown, which helps the watch achieve 200-meter water resistance, is positioned at 4 o’clock. It features three separate positions that allow the watch to be wound, and the date and time to be set.
