This quote from "The Closet Audiophile" review sums up nicely what I have read elsewhere about this amp:
"Much like my experience with the build quality of the Heron 5, the sonic performance was somewhat of a mixed bag. The amp exuded smoothness, unmistakable ease, and a huge soundstage that was impressive on certain tracks. Yet I also felt that it lacked definition in the bottom octaves as well as macro- and microdynamics. Its smooth character also had a tendency to gloss over texture and steal air from around the performers." https://theclosetaudiophile.wordpress.com/2016/04/03/airist-audio-heron-5-a-review/
It seems to me that this amp would pair well with headphones that can be fatiguing like the bright and peaky HD 800 or Elear, which are rather punchy.  For smooth sounding  headphones like the E-MU Teak or TH-X00, I am concerned that this amp might turn them into molasses.

BanerCorrecting a point if you allow me. Do you own the HD 800 and the Elear? I do, and I (owning several dozens of hps) really cannot find myself in this statement : " bright and peaky HD 800 or Elear, which are rather punchy " - OK the HD 800 is bright and peaky., but it is NOT punchy, even with good amps (e.g. ifi iCAN Pro) - the Elear is neither bright (rather dark instead) nor peaky, and not just "rather punchy" but super punchy.

massbidI agree but that IS what I wrote. I did not write that the HD 800 are punchy, I wrote that the Elear are punchy (you have to be careful with the volume or you can blow a hole in your head). And I did not write that the Elear are bright and peaky, I wrote that the HD 800 are bright and peaky. I have extensively auditioned both headphones and passed on purchasing either for those reasons. However, I would really like to hear them on the Heron because if the negative attributes mentioned can be tempered I might change my mind.
