So how are these for gaming? I heard that I should get audiophile headphones and slap a ModMic on rather than get a gaming headset. So please if you have these tell me what you think and give recommendations to products you think are good.
JWarrior939I have the K7XX and I absolutely love them for gaming! The sound stage is big compared to my other headphones. I'm able to run around and pay less attention to my radar since I can hear so much more.
I also have the HD 6XX and between the 2 I prefer my K7XX for gaming. When it comes to music I'm more partial to 6XX. I use them both through my (magni 3/modi 2 uber) Schiit Stack.
cKreepyOhThanks for this response! Sorry to be a pain but is it a necessity to get an amp for these? Don't know if my Mobo can handle it(Asus Maximus VIII Hero Alpha).
JWarrior939I'd say that an amp is the best way to drive them properly. They will work with onboard audio but won't be at their full potential.
If you're looking for an alternative check out the Sennheiser GAME ONE. I thought about getting those since the mic and audio reviews are good. As for adding a mic to the K7XX the modmic 5 reviews I listened to sounded very good. I suggest listening to the mics and checking out reviews on YouTube.
I did try out the Schiit Fulla 2 with my K7XX and they worked very well together. It's a $99 DAC/Amp combo that runs off usb and they offer a trial period with restocking fee. If you do any console gaming the Fulla works with PlayStation which is pretty cool.
I'm very happy with these headphones and they blow all the "gaming" headphones I've had out of the water. Remember that this is just all my opinion and sound is subjective! I hope any of this helps!
JWarrior939i gave up using my modmic on these, i tried sticking them on in many times, but they always ended up falling off. I think this is most likely due to the surface being slightly curved and perforated. i also bought some stronger double sided 3m tape to stick them, and they still wouldnt stay on. maybe its just me, but my experience with the modmic and the k7xx was not that pleasant. I agree with @cKreepyOh with the k7xx being great for gaming.
cKreepyOhit would be awesome if you could highlight the type of games you play? FPS etc.. Spatial awareness is critical in these games. I need to hear foot steps.. gun reloads.. etc.
Fire88FlyI just sat down and compared these to my old Superlux HD668B headphones. I think the K7XX are incredibly immersive when it comes to sound. I jumped on Destiny 2 to ran around the tower listening for stereo imaging and the K7XX gave me a very good sense of actually being there. I then ran to a hidden sector and again my K7XX felt open/wide with an excellent sense of where sounds came from and how far away they were.
I think audio source and amp are important so I use them with my magni 3/modi 2 uber Schiit stack. I used optical out from my PS4 to my stack and played The Last of Us. Again my K7XX sounded amazing with the same results as my comparison for D2.
I honestly don't think you can go wrong with these headphones as long as you give them the proper audio source and amp they deserve.
cKreepyOhThanks cKreepy. I ordered them. I Liked your review too. I think they will be fantastic for FPS gaming. I also ordered the Creative Labs external Sound Card/Amp BlasterX G5. I will let you know how they sound together.
Fire88FlyI also use them for vidieogames, PUBG and Zelda: Breath Of the Wild so far. Zelda sounds incredible. That game uses so much ambient sounds and surround effect from near by creatures. I was shocked that Nintendo put so much detail in surround sound. PUBG sounded really great, it was very immersive and you heard footsteps circling around you. My only complaint with the 7XX, but I think it’s PUBG’s fault, is that gunshots are so loud; in PUBG you need to raise volume up to get better cues on footsteps, but when you start firing, the gunshots are uncomfortably loud. I wish PUBG offered a setting to lower gun effects sensitivity.
Sometimes I purposely choose to use my 7XX over my 7.1 Polk Audio RTi series and Pioneer Elite setup. That says a lot about the 7XX. If I had one other complaint, it would be that, I wish the 7XX had more bass for gaming.
JWarrior939Sorry, I forgot to say that gaming headsets are horrible. Avoid at all costs. I bought a top of the line gaming headset and, its night and day with headphones like 7XX or even the HD598. The sound in every department is horrific when it comes to quality sound, like base, soundstage, treble etc.
