This knife is a workhorse. It is a bit chunky but that is what I expected. It deploys flawlessly and is ready for the task at hand. It will be carried regularly in my daypack when I am out in the woods.
Bought the 3” combo for my wife. She absolutely loves it. She adamantly stated she didn’t understand why I wanted an EDC. But after seeing how convenient it was when mine finally came in, she wanted her own. Bought the smaller combo version for her for use in the garden. The serrated edge is great for cutting through small green stems. The best part is, now I don’t need an excuse when I want to buy another one!
Pros:
Sharp out of the box
Serrated edge is great for multifunction
Smaller profile is great as an edc
Cons:
Action is a little stiff
With stiff action, you can’t close it one-handed
Wanted a tough knock-around folder for camping and this handles the role very well. Blade came very sharp, assisted action is good - opens very easily and with a resounding “snick!” - bit awkward for me to close 1-handed, but can be done.
Overall very happy - I’m confident it will handle the abuses of camping for years - while allowing the display queens to all stay safely at home!
I mean it's an assisted folder so the action is meh. I will admit that the sound is great when you open it though. Very sharp profile out of the box. With the steel quality, we'll see how long it lasts but I'm satisfied. There's a lot of steel nerds out there, so I know some scoff at this knife. For what it is, it's a great tool.
I have an older Al Mar knife and the this one doesn't compare to the quality, fit or finish, but its also four times more. I didn't realize that this one was made in China. Not saying all stuff from China is bad. You get what you pay for. The knife is decent for the price.
Nomad627Al Mar Knives changed owners in 2019, going from Japanese to Chinese manufacturing. Most reports, like yours, testify to the fact that quality has gone down as prices have gone up.
It's a robust, assisted opener (no it's not a 'switchblade' but a solid, useful knife) I bought the larger straight edge this Drop. But I will buy the smaller, serrated edge as an edc next drop . And it comes sharp but does take an edge rather easily so enjoy it.
