A similar knife with carbon fiber scales is the SOG Terminus XR. The first version featured BDZ1, I picked it up for around $60 during Christmas. The present version is around $80 and uses S35V steel for the blade. Finally, you can find the same knife with G-10 and D2 steel for around $50 or less. All of them use the sliding Axis-like lock. I realize that SOG in the past used mediocre steel, but they have started to step up their game as market demand has changed.

Have you had it apart? I'm curious as to the build.

reswrightI've had a couple of Benchmade apart. I don't enjoy mucking with the Axis lock. But with the pandemic afoot ( I wonder why there is no talk of a potdemic?), perhaps I'll do this tomorrow. I'll let you know after it happens.

ok nitpicking time, but it needs to be said. -bro...seriously couldn't think of a better name? -slide lock = axis lock, probably. give credit when credit is due. even if the patent is expired (unless copyright, then i'd understand, but still not their own lock design) -pictures dont show the knife full knife deployed, nor if it's a flowthrough or backspacer (probably flowthrough based on the placement of the screws) -that front finger choil.... what were they thinking -if i wanted a ripoff griptillian, i wouldve just bought sanranmu (more colors, designs, etc. to choose from, plus their 440C is pretty decent) can we just call it amare's version of a griptillian? the overall package doesnt feel like a new knife. other than that, i'm rather intrigued by amare. they seem to hit a lot of boxes, like full flat grinds, deep carry clip, serialization, things that the market really cares about
My first thought when I saw the design was HK Axis. Am I remembering the name right? Is a Ricasso [sic?] the same thing as a sharpening choil?

EvshrugClose! Off by an ampersand: I think you mean the H&K Axis. Pretty sure those were made by Benchmade too. Benchmade has made a ton of different axis locking knives since 2004, so there may be others that are a fit comparison. The ricasso is actually the unground portion of the blade where the choil is found. I believe it's a throwback term to a part of a longsword blade right above the hilt that wasn't sharpened, so you could if necessary start whaling on someone with a two-handed grip.

Im sorry but this just a blatant ripoff/bad copy of the benchmade bugout. I dont care how cheap it is, i would never in a million years trade my bugout for this inferior knife with comparably inferior steel. I personally choose the quality of materials, craftsmanship, and phenomenal customer service benchmade provides, and choose to buy American made products every chance i get

It will break when you need it most (ask me how I know) - I, for one, would like to know the story! Please share!
Pretty eloquent writing! The unsaid part is that we shouldn’t pay supersteel prices for knives with VG-10, but that’s not the case here anyway. I have yet to experience a practical difference between even 8Cr13MoV and my best steel knives (I use a Byrd Meadowlark more than any other knife, in the kitchen as a pairing knife), so super steels are just for the emotional “cool factor” for most people. I do enjoy the tactile/fidget factor of folding knives though. As long as there’s still well-made affordable options, and people accept that they’re just looking for a cool luxury/art in the form of a knife, then they can spend as much as they want IMO 😂 I’d also like to hear your take! My first experience with a Bugout and Griptillian: the Griptillian slipped out of my hand while I was trying to flick a full deployment out with the thumbstud, and it fell point first into my thigh. I had to apologize to the store owner and offered to pay the difference between new/used (because I didn’t want to own the knife after that!), while staining my pants with blood and asking if he had a bandaid. I think I was pretty cool-headed about it, all things considered.

I'm really just thinking about the quality of the knife, does anyone know much about Amare? A bit of research makes them seem promising. Plus the Benchmade axis lock is now free to use. This seems like it could be a great deal.

My big problem (and I'm not going to pretend it's everyone's problem) with axis lock inspirations is the green light it gives to companies to leave out a reinforcing frame . Benchmade has done this as well so it's on them too. I understand a frame adds weight , but in my opinion it also adds rigid handle stability that G10 , carbon fiber, and even frn can need . I was glad to see this in formerly Mass Drops Perpetua offering (even if it is shaky in other areas). It's hard to tell with this knife what's beneath the scales outside of the obvious framing around the pivot and axis like lock and what may be some at the lanyard point. Would love to get a look down the spine and open edge up look down the handle to confirm one way or another . Formerly Mass Drop could also be a knife "bro" and mention it.
Totally fair enough. What did Nutnfancy call it? 2nd kind of cool? You want liners just because you like ‘em, and nobody can argue against that. Speaking of Nutnfancy, I also got caught up in his quest for the lightest carry possible (or at least weight to functionality... though I never got myself a RAT 1 to split logs 😁). Though I feel the amount of reinforcement provided by a flat span of steel is negligible, if I’m honest with myself I don’t think it makes an appreciable difference in weight savings. Maybe the slight benefits of having or not having the liners would matter more if I was in a different situation, but I’m a suburban nerd whose wife is afraid of snow, working on the Internet from home, so it doesn’t affect my use-cases either way. I do have a Ganzo with a variant on the Axis lock, and honestly I don’t know how different this would be from that (with regards to the action of the knife, which is the only thing of interest to me here). The spring tension on my Ganzo is stiff enough to give my fingertips a blister if I mess with it enough, though the only time I handled a Griptillian I wouldn’t say the action was world’s better (and I ended up losing my grip on the Griptillain, which lead to an awkward situation where I was offering the seller to pay for the repair of the tip and used vs new price while slowly staining my fav pants with blood).

EvshrugHey, I'm happy to see an American company doing well. I'm pretty sure Benchmade took this into consideration, tested and established limits liner vs no liner . I'm really doubt I'll be cutting anything that'll tear the pivot and locking mechanism out of G10. Truth be told I've never warmed to the Axis lock at all (given the current state of the country Axis probably would work better with the latex gloves I'm wearing everywhere) was going to maybe try a Hogue Deka ( I mean 20cv at the Bugout price had me leaning) I thought it was a full liner , but saw a post saying same basic layout . Funny enough talking about Nutnfancy , just saw Shabazz upgrade his small Bugout to carbon fiber scales. He used to complain along the same line as me , didn't hear him mention it during the upgrade and haven't heard him mention it in more recent reviews with the same style. He must of found it to work just fine the way it is. Hey, keep that blood loss to a minimum, take care !

I am sure I would like this more than my bugout. I am going to try and find some reviews. I have the big Amar'e slip joint. That's a good one. I may get this one.
