What I really need is a boot waterproofer/protectant.
excellect product. works great for all the natural leather boots that dropped here recently. Now we just needsome more Thorogood drops :D
Good timing for this drop. With the end of winter comes a plague of salt-stained boots. Tanner's Blend is the ideal product to nourish the leather in your boots after cleaning off the salt with soap and water. Here's a 5-step guide I wrote to remove salt stains from your boots. https://ashlandleather.com/blogs/news/how-to-remove-salt-stains-for-your-boots
Is there animal product in it?
I have it but it smells funny.
IvanSpendalot
This is made with lanolin and lanolin derivatives
ashlandleather
Thank you. Sounds ok to me. Will resume using it.
The instructions say to "brush" the leather as the last step. I assume this would be done with a horsehair brush? What's the ideal bristle length? Should they be shorter and stiff or long?
ChitownM2
Definitely a soft horsehair brush. I like my brush a little more tightly packed and dense but they seem to be hard to find...the bristles should be soft, kind of firm, but flexible.
Same $8.50 shipping for 2oz or 6oz. Better get the 6oz.

Re-posting this from a year ago:
I have been meaning to write an article for how to remove salt stains and the Tanner's Blend is EXCEPTIONAL for helping in this process. Here's a quick guide for removing salt stains from your boots and shoes: 1) Brush: Quickly brush the leather to remove dirt 2a) Clean: Get a pint glass sized cup and fill it with water. Add a couple drops of regular dish soap and stir. Use a soft cloth to wipe down your footwear and clean off the dirt. This is the process that will remove the salt stains and dirt. 2b) If you have saddle soap available you can substitute this in for dish soap 2c) The process of using soap on the leather will remove all of the salt and dirt but also remove a good amount of the tanning oils/waxes/greases that were imparted into the leather by the tannery. If you do not nourish the fibers with Tanner's Blend after cleaning with soap the leather will dry out and crack (similar to dry skin/chapped lips!). 3) Dry: Allow the boots or shoes to dry thoroughly! THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Further, DO NOT use a hair drier or any other way to expedite the drying process. It is very important to allow the leather to air dry to get all of the salt and dirt out. Typically letting them dry overnight is enough 4) Brush 5) Apply: Use your hand (I do) or a soft cloth to apply the Tanner's Blend thoroughly to the leather. The conditioner will nourish the leather back to its original form. 6) Final brushing Note: The Tanner's Blend is an exceptional product for restoring old leather goods. We have seen amazing results on older, antique leather furniture. In fact, Chris Koelblinger (tanner at Horween and developer of this product) originally crafted this for his personal use on an old dirty couch. Please feel free to respond with any questions. I am more than happy to help here or at my email address. Contact Phil at Phil@ashlandleather.com
Would this also help remove excess polish on leather? I have a shell wallet that I stupidly added too much Venetian cream to and I'm wondering if this would help take off some of the cloudy left over polish I wasn't able to buff out.
watchesandwallets
@watchesandwallets Super great question! The Tanner's Blend will NOT remove excess polish. My best suggestion is to take a dry, clean cloth and wipe off the excess Venetian. A horsehair brushing can help the waxes in the Venetian to dive in.

Some things I've noticed about this product:
Packaging: My three tubes of the 6oz showed up individually wrapped and in a box. Little chance of spillage through "normal" handling.
Container: There is a seal over the spout that has to be removed before the product can be used. Once that seal is removed, however, the cleaner/conditioner flows pretty freely. In fact, a little too freely for my taste. Without the seal (which can't easily be put back once detached) if the tube is uncapped, the liquid will flow. No pressure needed. Make sure your cap is secured properly or risk a huge mess.
Process: Wipe down with moist cotton cloth. Apply dab of cleaner/conditioner. Rub with another cotton cloth until fully absorbed. Rinse/repeat.
Use: My initial intended use was a couple of leather bags I inherited from my Grandfather. The first bag was a MacGregor gym bag that appeared to be in very good condition. The leather was clean and very stiff. After applying the cleaner/conditioner it still looked to be in very good condition, the leather remained stiff and rough to the touch.
The second bag was a carry-on sized Hartmann Luggage bag. The leather was well-used with multiple stains and scratches. It is a much softer more absorbent leather. The first thing I noticed is, when I would apply a dab and then rub it in, there was a spot left behind from the initial dab. Very disconcerting at first, however it went away after a few minutes. Secondly, there was a slight darkening to the leather. Next, it had almost no affect on the stains, except to make the leather darker which made the stains less prominent. I have no idea what those stains are or how many decades they've been in the leather so it was a shot in the dark as to whether or not this product (or any) would help. However, all scratch marks went away. Finally, while the leather was soft from the very beginning, I believe it feels slightly softer now. It might just be my mind playing tricks on me, though.
Conclusion: The product did no harm, which is good. I think the darkening just came from re-moisturizing the leather, and probably took it closer to its original color. The stains, as I said, were a crap shoot. The bags are definitely better for having received the treatment. I have a few more items bequeathed to me, I'll give them a go, in due time, and report back.

Hope it will be shipped in hard package not envelope. Risk to get squeezed tube.
How does this compare with other leather conditioners (eg, Lord, Nova, etc.) available on Amazon for a fair amount less (and available now)? It sounds good--I've got 3 pairs of Horween boots--but is it that different?
Would this be suitable for use on hide watch straps (alligator, etc.)?
Is it possible to combine shipping with the Ashland wallet I bought earlier?

The 2 oz version is showing up in my cart as $11.99, not $7
fartknockers209
That price is correct - it's 18.99 minus $7, not $7. Let me know if you have any other questions!
