Folks -
As an "Invertebrate Amazon Abuser.." or at least this is what my partner says, although she often omits the river - I understand just how spoiled we have become by their apparently obsessive attention to service and delivery - which from the consumer's view is often pretty unbeatable.
But, they are a VERY different entity than Massdrop - do not forget, that for Amazon, we are a digitally productized income stream of significant value. Yeah - you, your eyeballs, your clicks, and your purchases are a bulk commodity in the marketing data stream that they sell for profit.
This isn't a Bad Thing, Amazon does reinvest this income into warehousing, shipping, and cataloging a staggering number of products - some of which I am delighted to greedily snarf up.
So why waste your time with Massdrop?
Because they are VERY different from Amazon - Massdrop is crowd-sourced, not Big Data Driven - we, the individual user/consumers determine what products are offered and at what price they end up being sold for. Essentially, this site is acting as our buying agent, customs/shipping factor, and order fulfilment center - but we users are actually creating Massdrop's catalog on the fly.
The good news is that this model can dig out some extremely interesting and esoteric stuff - things that fall way below the Amazon Radar or don't fit into their business ecology - as evidenced by the very passionate and active Audiophile, Keyboard, and Quilting (Quilting?? !!) communities on this site who've apparently really like this business collective.
The bad news is that all 'drops' are basically done 'Ad Hoc' - on the fly, unscheduled, and created from whole cloth - so, when the structure works, it's pretty damn cool - but when there's a fart in Customs, or the supplier poohs up, or God drops a trillion gallons of water on your state & your ark doesn't start - it all goes pear-shaped until things can be individually sorted out.
So, the moral is - if you want what Amazon has, go there - they're awfully good at what they do.
If you like Massdrop's stuff, and can deal with some irregular funkiness - stick around - but remember, you are part of the crowd - the cool stuff that comes out is directly proportional to the energy that you put in ...
Cheers
Jim
Dr_JimDr. Jim,
That was a well phrased defense of Massdrop that totally misses the point. Their stated goal is to responsive to customer needs. Traditionally the advantage the small vendor has over the big retailers is customer service. Here the situation is inverted.
Granting everything you said, it's not relevant. The problem is twofold.
Effectiveness:
We all signed up for a delay from the time of joining the drop to delivery. There was a target ship date. Massdrop was totally ineffective at meeting it. This means that either didn't know it was going to be late or they did. If they knew and didn't take action to fix it, or even tell us when they first found out, that is a massive customer service fail. If they didn't know, then they weren't doing a good job on monitoring their supply chain, another fail.
Responsiveness:
After the delay became clear, they have been many complaint. Some expressed a desire for expedited shipping or refunds or both. These are not unreasonable. Many vendors do this in the interest of good will. Massdrop has said nothing. Others have left the drop often vowing to never use Massdrop again. Again, Massdrop has said nothing. No matter how you view it, it said Massdrop doesn't care about its customers.
So the proble isn't with Massdrop conceptually. It is that they are ineffective and unresponsive when things go wrong and leave their customers unsupported and angry.
Dr_JimThis whole "community " thing is just marketing talk! Its there to make ppl feel good ,its not like u actially save in the ling run anyway with "drops" ! Lets just callbthis what it is -regular retail sales!!
These fancy names are there just to confuse simpletons like u !im sorry that hurt your feelings but im just being honest ( now i shall wait for u to come back with something that sounds clever as is required per the norm!)
Exactly! Id window and coin pockets are useless for modern wallets. At least since I pretty much never use cash. I just need slots for drivers licence, credit card, gym membership, public transport, and university pass.
I see quite a few people upset about not receiving the wallet but personally, now that I've received it, I'm disappointed with the product. I was expecting the carbon-fiber inlay to be something I can feel. This is not. It either is a fake carbon fiber pattern or it's just covered with some plastic sealant that makes the whole thing feel cheap. Very disappointed with this.
SJBDALLASI have received it yesterday as well. Let me tell you the honest truth.
It has fantastic packaging, and even includes a a fancy box, which includes a premium cotton bag, which finally incases the wallet. The wallet itself though, is disappointing. It is huge, the carbon fiber pattern is real, but looks so fake, the plastic sealent make it produce too much glare. These are pictures. One taken with flash(how the company wants you to see the product), And the last one is how it looks actually in the real world. You decide..
CrashdI have to agree with Crashd, I'm rather disappointed with the wallet.
For the money I was hoping for something sleek and nice, but this is built rather cheaply, stitching doesn't look like it's going to hold up either.
The coating over the carbon fiber is rubberized plastic, so it feels super cheap.
It's very rigid, and gets thick quickly, because there's no "give" on the outer shell.
Mine also had some kind of white stains on the inside, which I was able to mostly rub off, but some of the stain is still there.
I'll use it and see how it goes, but looks like I'll have to minimize what cards I carry in this thing.
Looks like this wallet only used the carbon fiber as inlays within the leather wallet.
Vote on my poll for a wallet which has an entire carbon fiber outer shell but still stays slim!

Total turd. Already replaced mine with an actual working wallet. Horrible design, unusable design, junk material and absence of any engineering savvy. If anyone wants mine, comment to connect, I am gonna toss it in the trash here soon I think. Could not possibly be more disappointed and I wish the company a quick and speedy financial demise.
Its sad to say that of the four things I have ordered from Massdrop three have been late one being almost two months late. It is sad because this seemed like such a good service to begin with.
We've just heard back from the vendor regarding the tracking information for the group's order and the shipment is schedule to land in New Jersey tomorrow. We've made sure to prioritize this inbound shipment with our warehouse team and they will be working to turn all packages around as quickly as possible. We will update the group again immediately upon confirmation of complete shipment.
Thanks you all once again for your patience and expect an update from us by the end of the day Pacific Time on 10/9 or sooner if something comes up.
doppleherzdoppleherz, this isn't a matter about shipping times not being guaranteed but rather the massive delay in even processing the order. Shipping won't take place until Massdrop processes the inbound arrival at their warehouse.
Tyler and other folks at Massdrop keep updating us with details about the delay but they conveniently ignore any mention of what can be done for the problems this has caused for the people who relied on a reasonable time frame for receiving their order.
If Massdrop doesn't understand the importance of basic customer service then they won't survive against the other companies that do.
Adding on @SteveA 's note: Its really sad that I purchased 2 wallets to present it to someone on their birthdays and I still haven't received this product. I ordered this on Aug 1. Whats even sadder is that I have contacted support at least 3 times and there was absolutely no response. Thanks Massdrop.
So why after all of this are we still be charged for shipping? Why not provide complimentary expedited shipping to compensate for the screw-up? The vendor hasn't even processed these orders so customers will have to wait about a week longer because we know this is going by standard rates.
This is why I should have just stuck with ordering via Amazon. Their customer service is top shelf. When there's a problem with an order they make it right by the customer.
UberPoochThat would be a great way to say thank you to their customers for being so patient but like I have said before this is the norm and you will be charged for the shipping either way.
