I thought they would be made out of aluminum, but these are overpriced plastic boxes.

Here are the weights of 2 similarly sized bottles.
Weight of 33 fl. oz. (1L) SIGG aluminum bottle: 5.1 oz. (145g)
Weight of 32 fl. oz. (0.95L) Nalgene narrow mouth polycarbonate bottle: 5.875 oz. (168g)
The advantage of using aluminum over plastic is that you can make the walls thinner without increasing the risk of cracking. Therefore you can reduce the weight even further.
