Looking at the Pterodactyl from the side, you immediately get a sense of its name. As if the flying dinosaur was flapping its wings, the knife features a long, undulating look, like it’s propelling itself forward Read More
Me buying all these knives! That’s gotta be a sickness! And then Massdrop drops me in the middle of such an interesting and engaging community of knife freaks! Well, I took the bait and here I am buying another knife. Now I know how someone can be happy and hate themselves at the same time and in equal measure! ;)
I'm loving the design, but I have no idea how to feel about the brand. I've heard they make good cheapie, but this is in the process range of some tough competition.
How do they stack up compared to we knife or ZT?
AtticusVulpesTough to say, as their early titanium models have been hit or miss in terms of quality control. I have a couple early models with low serial numbers and they are rough. Poorly finished corners, crooked jimping, poor action, CF inlay fell out, etc... however I have a couple newer ones including a Dolphin from a later run (no serial #) and they are completely flawless. I'd put them on par with ZT, but not quite WE.
I think they are actively listening to customers and iterating their designs and processes. The Pterodactyl is on my buy list so I'm in for one. If it isn't worth ~$200 I'll return it!
AtticusVulpesI own 2 of their Ti models so far, Goblin and Imp.
They're definitely quality knives with all the bells and whistles expected from a higher priced knife.
Very snappy opening, smooth closing, ceramic bearings, tight tolerances, perfect detent, no hot spots, good ergonomics.
And that's on their two smallest Ti knives. I've heard many good things about the other models.
I don't recall for sure what their other Ti knives went for here, but it wasn't this much, maybe others can chime in?
I don't own any ZT, but if I were to compare them to my md/ff/WE Falcon, I'd say the manufacturing quality is easily on par with that one.
And the ergonomics are better on the Bestechs (it could be argued that that's on the design team, not the manufacturers...but i think some of that, like the uncomfortable and difficult to access lock release, should have been something a manufacturer could have brought up as having room for improvement during the prototyping phase)
KavikThe prices have risen enormously compared to 1 year ago! I bought my 1st two for about 1/2 that. A fellow collector buddy & a gentleman on here all agreed the Bestechs would go way up when everyone caught on to their quality! I know several knife makers that told me after initial runs that there are many that sub their work out to Bestech because of the high quality!
GunsI agree that in general Bestechs quality is easy above their price point, but that's not really what I'm saying here.
Just annoyed that this very knife dropped for the first time just about 2 months ago, and all of its from the first drop paid about $25 more than this drop.... That's usually the opposite of how it goes.
Just annoying for previous buyers, but great news for anyone joining this time around 👍
P. S.
I just realized I never came back to review this one. Doing that now.
Spoilers: it's a great knife, with a couple minor flaws in my eyes. But I'd still recommend it
I have one, it's pretty sweet. Bestech also released the Skyhawk and Shinkansen models which look nice too, the Shinkansen is a front flippper. For a good deal on these (and any) knives without waiting on a drop I will share a hint: WMK + LTK. That's all I'll say about that 🤐
Received my Pterodactyl today...
WOW, I already own 5 Bestech knives and this one is ON POINT! Feels great in hand and has awesome drop shut action after 10 min of flipping. If they keep this up WE Kives better look out. I would put the quality right with them.
With a lot of force. yes. but that's not a deal breaker for me. I'm not so sure why others have an issue with it. It requires a lot of force to do it. It's not like the knife will ever open without you being the one to intentionally open it.
WoodyBaltoI know I sound like a broken record on that topic lately, but there are reasons it matters more for some than others.
My pterodactyl isn't going to open on its own either, but doesn't take a lot of force to whip it open. Personally, I'd be fine with that.
However, in new york state that technically makes it illegal to carry as a "gravity knife" due to unfortunate wording regarding centrifugal force in a law that desperately needs updating
I like the idea of the inlay here because I'm getting stick of samey slab sided titanium flippers, but I really don't like the execution here. The overall lines look nice but the inlay looks like an afterthought. The way it runs under the pivot collar and one of the back spacer screws is half on half off the carbon fiber and the way it hangs over the lock bar all look off to me.
This is also kinda pricey for bestech. They traditionally have given better materials than the price point, this just seems okay. There are tons of titanium framelocks in s35 at or below this price, so this is a pass for me.
Love that green though. Why don't more people make green knives that aren't OD?
NotsurewhyibotherThe purpose in the overlap of the lock bar is to prevent accidental pressure on the bar. I have a ZT 0452 that is difficult to deploy under pressure at speed due to unintended lock bar pressure. I do not want to have to think about where my finger pressure is on the knife during deployment. I want it to be reflexive. If it was the only knife I used, it would become 2nd nature. I have a lot of knives. My Bestech Swordfish has never let me down. It is a liner lock. I would have to choose the $52 Bestech over the $220 ZT if I had to choose. My non-knife friends can rarely open the ZT.
1911TeacherKeen observation on the CF blocking you from accidentally putting pressure on the lock bar during opening.
@notsurewhyibother :
I don't feel like the CF looks like an afterthought at all, and I like the way it tucks in under the pivot and half under the one screw actually. That provides a secondary means of securing the CF to the Ti, so that even if the epoxy in there were to somehow fail, the CF scales won't just fall off. Overkill maybe, but not poor or lazy design, IMO
Of all my BesTechs, this Pterodactyl comes closest to perfection in my eyes. The look, the feel, the perfect blade shape for utility, and the use of carbon fibre that looks pretty but functions as an overtravel stop for the framelock.
