I see this thing allowing blades to rotate either by gravity or when grabbing/placing knives, banging into each other, thereby damaging edges. A simple strip seems way more practical

We've had a magnetic block for years and love it. You'd have to be a klutz to knock the other knives off.

wouldn't this magnetize the blades and ruin the edge?

not directly, but sharper points on magnetized objects focus the magnetic field. So the sharp edge of your knife is more likely to pick up magnetic dust (like little bits of steel left over from sharpening), which will sit flat against your edge effectively dulling it. I'm not sure if it's a big enough deal to a home cook, but I would be very surprised if a pro used a magnetic rack to store their blades.

tyler256I personally recommend wiping off an edge after sharpening(or even honing) regardless of whether it's magnetized or not; most of the metal dust will get wiped off on whatever you're cutting first. Most people don't seem to care or notice though.

Ahh, Form over Function, my old nemesis, we meet again.
This thing combines most of the flaws of knife blocks and magnetic strips into a single product: The reason to have a magnetic knife holder is so you don't have a bulky knife block taking up space on your counter. On the other hand, you might need a knife block because you have too many knives to fit on a magnetic holder* and, unless you only buy knives in sets, they don't really display that well. (Also, because keeping knives in a drawer is too inconvenient.)
How often, I wonder, do people who own these accidentally knock a knife off when they're reaching for one near it?

*The real reason most people with knife blocks have them is because it came with the knives, but if you're looking for an "aftermarket" block I assume you've moved beyond that.

OneDollarWilliamOne reason people might want a block over a strip is if they are renting and aren't allowed to screw anything in to their walls. Renting sucks.
