I wonder if massdrop commits to things before knowing the price? So many average deals lately, it's actually a harmful business model.. New potential users check out a couple of drops, see no decent savings, and move on, never to come back. I think it would be smart to cut back on quantity of drops and make sure all drops are good value.

Hey mate, I'm also in Aus and this seems to be around $15 cheaper here (obviously the 160 lumen model is cheaper), which is ok if you're not in a hurry as shipping can take a while from massdrop.

Come on Massdrop!! Y'all gotta step it up! maybe focus on more blue box stuff. I don't mind paying the same price for something and waiting 3 months for it to ship if I have a chance at a cool upgrade!

patrickstevenstxThanks for the suggestion about the blue box (popular in the EDC and Audiophile Communities). We're working on that and hope to have our first UL blue box in January. As for the price, some store selling on Amazon dropped their price today, after our drop went live. It wasn't that low earlier this week when we price checked. Remember, not everyone has Prime (which costs $100 year), and not everyone is in the US. So this is still a good drop for many people.

DannyMilksI agree that for some it is still a good drop. i still think though that the most productive business model for Massdrop moving forward to is focus on a blue box type plan. The "Massdrop" effect on Amazon seems to be happening more and more and eventually I think more and more people will get tired of being disappointed when they price check and just stop coming to the site.
Here is how I view Massdrop and I'm sure this isn't news to anyone. Massdrop isn't a site that I go to when I need something. That's what Amazon and other retailers are for. Massdrop is a site that I visit, often multiple times a week, to have a "deal" tell me what I "need"!! Lol. It's purely impulse purchases on either things I've wanted but hadn't pulled the trigger on or things that are just cool to me and now, because they are at a significant discount, I can justify the hell I will receive from my wife when the package arrives.
So, back to why a blue box approach is superior. Let's say you sell 50 of these headlamps. I have no idea what your cut of the profits is but for easy math let's call it $10 a lamp. Easy math says y'all made $500. Now in example 2 yall sell 750 headlamps. But this example is a blue box so there are goodies. Let's hope that these incentives were donated by the supplier but more realistically they were probably just acquired at wholesale or better. The cut from the headlamps is $7500. Let's hypothesize that there were $1500 worth of upgrades. Massdrop still nets $5000. I know that this was a super simple and totally not accurate model of explaining things but the point I'm trying to make is hopefully clear.
Spend more time on building quality drops that have more of the gambling feel of a blue box. Your past blue boxes should make it obvious that people LOVE the anticipation that comes from not knowing if you got an upgrade or not. If things continue down the same path with Amazon matching prices then people are going to lose interest. They will put up with slow shipping and other issues but only if they feel their is value gained. I'm sure I'm preachig to the choir here. Just hope the message lands so that I can continue to drive my wife crazy with Massdrop coming in the mail!!
In Summation: switch to a business model with at least 50% of drops being blue box in style!
cheers

Interesting. Wonder what the difference is? Looks like the same lumens, both water resistant... Unless Amazon's info is yet again incorrect...

FuzzymuzzleHopefully EVERYTHING. I have one of original version of the storm, purchased new in 2016, and it is junk! Nothing on it worked well or at all. It is now dead sitting on a shelf. I had very high expectations for it, but found the cheap $11 energizer brand models ran circles around it.

I have and use the 2016 Storm with 250 Lumens which is plenty for me. I like the green light for snowing conditions and feel all backcountry headlamps should have at least an IPX 67 rating such as the this 2017 model. The 2016 version has blue light but the blue light is an indicator light only. I like the red lamp for in shelter use and switched onto bright, when in camp with others around. Although the Green and Red produce the same intensity, the green looks much brighter as the eyes are more sensitive the green light frequencies. So if you get one, and the red does not seem as bright, understand that your headlamp is fine and your eyes are only human. I don't use the blinking feature much unless I am needing to conserve battery power. I use the 4 AAA Energizer lithium batteries for Winter and finge conditions and other makes of batteries for the warmer weather conditions. Another feature I like is the removable strap option so I can place this headlamp lower on my torso for longer night hiking shadows and less stumbling. And last but not least, the tap feature: Great idea and helpful to go from bright to dim and vice versa with just a tap of an index finger on the side of housing.
Concerns you may want to inquire about:
My biggest concern with my 2016 Storm is the detents around the tilt feature of the headlamp, so once it is adjusted, try not to bump it (as cycling of this feature may cause loosening of the mechanism). It is made of plastic so will inevitably wear out as friction rubbing plastic parts do. You may want to check with Black Diamond on this feature to see if the 2017 version is more robust, in that regard, or at a minimum, more resistant to being tilted accidentally and repeatedly. The last thing I would check on, is, if there has been any improvements on the degree of force necessary to open the housing in order to replace batteries. My 2016 version required a metal tool to get it open, and even with a tool, it was very difficult. There is no built in feature on the headlamp strap buckles that are designed in a way to open the battery housing clamp so hopefully, if need light and your batteries are shot, you have something that you know will work to open the housing.
Overall, this 4 battery headlamp should serve you well although, I think, generally speaking using two AA batteries will outperform 4 AAA's. I wish BD could design lights around the AA size or even better, a rechargeable 18650. The price for AA and AAA are generally the same.
Aside: I have not tried this yet, but found some AAA to AA battery holder converter adapters so, if I choose, I can use my USB AA battery charger to take AAA rechargeable batteries with me and forgo the expense of buying so many batteries (when night hiking is necessary or desirable). It can act also as an emergency cell phone charger to make a call or two (with a simple flick of a switch).

I have a Nitecore. 1000 lumens, better waterproof rating and seems like it's just as light. Bit more money but this unit is solid

serlenbeckThanks for the tip on the Nitecore HC30! I had not heard of the brand. I actually prefer headlamps and flashlights that take CR123A batteries.

I have 2016 version with an annoying feature so that every time you reduce the brightness, switch it off and back on- The light goes to the max and you have to adjust it again and again.  Did they fix this issue for 2017 ?
gidonozThey did. I bought this headlamp this year from a b/m store and it returns to the brightness you had it set to when power one. Swipe the side to max brightness, swipe again to return to your settings.

gnarledcouleeThe Revolt is the rechargeable version. I have had two of these Storm headlamps (had to replace the first one when I left sitting out and 'it walked away'). :D Hope someone got some good use out of it. I have used my current Storm for a few years now and finally decided it was time to upgrade when I saw the specs (lumen)and new additions (powertap, RGB, lamp memory recall) made to this platform that my current Storm does not have. Can't wait to get it!

They were selling for $50 at Cabela's several months ago. I got one with a $50 gift card. Can't beat that with a stick. Good headlamp! My wife borrows it from time to time.
