SCORE-SCORE-SCORE!!!!!! Actually scored one of the Damascus blade versions!!!!!!!!!! Its Christmas in November! This is a big, beast of a knife, much larger than expected...….but when I saw that Damascus - WOWZER!! Gorgeous!
The carbon is on Amazon for $125 what is the point of rolling the dice for a 4% chance at something you can get in two days for the same price. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00TUKZA6U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4YwZBbYJ2A2Y1
Is there anyone else who makes kwaikens? I got in on that massdrop wooden scale boker kwaiken and man was the quality meh. Most of the bokers I’ve owned were very meh especially for this price point. Price point wise I could just be spoiled by those MDxFF knives where you’re getting way better finish quality and materials for this price.
Also since im griping, I think the kwaiken is a tad too big for a gentleman folder. The mini kwaiken is a tad too small. Why can’t they stick To the gold standard 3 and 4 ratio? Also it’s so thick too, just unnecessary.

Yes. And sort of. That I know of, anyway.
"Sort of": Boker contracted with Pro-tech to make a auto version of the kwaiken. It's got the Boker nameplate, of course, because it's their design, but the build was all done by Pro-Tech, and it's as excellent as any other PT auto I've ever seen (which is a lot, I've got a thing for PTs). So if you're in a locale that permits an auto with a 3.5" blade and >8" overall, get one get one get one...wait, what am I saying? Get four like I did.
"Yes": Todd Begg's "Steelcraft" production line makes one. It's quite differently styled, but its still called a kwaiken. That one I don't own because I have a hard time justifying $400 for a production flipper. I'm sure it's nice, very nice, but for that price I could buy two of the aforementioned kwaiken autos, and they're better looking anyway. And autos.
My advice: go to BladeHq and get one of their micarta and brass exclusive kwaikens. They have a great build quality that I wish all Bokers did. The copper and carbon ones at BHQ look cooler online, but the micartas seem to be better built. And if you want to be 100% sure, order by phone and ask the person who answers to check out the actual knife they will be sending (best to call on Monday for that, as their storefront is closed and the employees have a bit more time).
Seems a bit pricey to likely end up with the base model. I have been debating whether to pick up one of the copper kwaikens at BkadeHQ.

I have both the copper/carbon, and the micarta/brass kwaikens; the latter comes in full and mini kwaiken sizes, and I own both of those. And I have to say, I Iike the micarta/brass design better. Not only is the blade deployment superior on the micarta/brass versions (which seems to be a generally shared experience among the people I've spoken to who own both varieties), the micarta scales, brass bolsters, and lightly stonewashed blade look better too. The pics online are deceiving, I dont know exactly why, but I totally understand why you would want the copper/carbon variety because while waiting for them to be released, I fully expected to like the copper bolsters and carbon fiber scales much better. Hell, copper and marbled carbon are two of my favorite build materials. But seen in-person, the micarta and brass look amazing together in a way the copper bolsters and marbled carbon scales somehow don't as much, esp in conjunction with the respective blades.
Just my two cents.

Thanks for the input. Not that I do not like the brass, just given the choice, I would normally pick copper over it. Always liked the look better. Yours is not the first comment on the copper having less than stellar deployment either.
I may just never get past the thinking about it stage. I have spent way too much on knives this year and do I really need another kwaiken? Sometimes the window shopping is nearly as fun as the knife in hand.
The Kwaiken has a thumb disc? I'm not seeing it
Bknguyen
there's a non-flipper version with the thumb disc. look up the 'orange g-10 scales' version
Carbon fiber VG 10 model, $131 at Amazon:

$6 more for CF and quicker shipping --- but no "lottery". Do you feel lucky, punk? : D
Upgrade your knives to a better steel (S35VN) and I'm in

Yes and no.
Primarily, I'm talking to potential buyers who are considering spending high-end prices for average steel. There is better value elsewhere.
I'm also putting on the internet which can be seen by anyone. If they truly care about sales and customer preferences (even CRKT just released a S35VN version of the Pilar) then pay someone to do an hour's worth of research online to find conversations like these, and report back.

How about 154 CM? That's what's on the autos, although it's more like a lateral move than a upgrade. I've long wished Pro-tech would go to CPM 154 (or better) as their standard blade steel, but they said that would raise their prices 10 to 33%, depending upon the knife. Would that be worth it? Depends on your perspective and individual needs.
That said, VG10 is good enough for a kwaiken, in my opinion because it's not a design that lends itself to hard use. The common knock on VG10 is for it's toughness, but that's just not going to be an issue for the vast majority of kwaiken use, so why charge more for attributes of some steel that would just be wasted anyway?
I'm not trying to change your mind because like I say, it all depends on individual use and and needs. Qnd in some ways I agree--it would be nice to see a truly premium blade steel on some kwaikens, at least, esp since some have carbon fiber or micarta scales, and all the flippers run on IKBS. In other words, premium options; why not a premium steel to complete the package? But there is an answer, which is that on a kwaiken, IKBS or premium scale material actually improve the knife, but very few people would notice the improvements S35VN provided over VG10 because VG10 provides high enough performance for what they need. They'd notice the higher price though.
Got the orange handle AUS8 non-flipper. Not impressed. Extremely hard to open with 2 hands, impossible with 1. Grind is uneven. Pocket clip wiggles back and forth even though it is tight against the handle. Makes me wonder if these "drops" are really worth the "discount". I'm assuming I can't send it back like I would if I bought elsewhere at "full" price. I have 1 more drop coming (Urban Trapper Petite) if its similar quality to this, then I'm done.
Got the Orange handled knife, also got the "Tactical Pen" interesting pen, bit complicated to unscrew the lid off every time to use it, writes very nice though. Personally wouldn't have bought it but it's neat.
Just got mine - nice knife (prefer a flipper, but hey you can't have everything!) For the record, was opened by Australian Border Protection Force (who are famous for keeping knives - regardless of legality) and made it through - yay. Thanks for the drop!

Great to heat those c***s kept their hands off it. My last few have come over unopened but they were nowhere near the possibility of being flicked (Buck Stockman was my last direct post, bringing a Kershaw Shuffle & Tekut Zero via MyMallBox)
Just got mine, OD green micarta. I can't believe I paid $90 for this, the QC is horrible. Uneven grind, uncentered blade, dull, difficult one-hand opening, very sticky lock, pocket clip is really tight against the handle yet wiggles side to side easily. This knife will never see any pocket time, catch and release for me.
Just got mine. a black G10 with the satin blade. Awesome but heavy
So happy to be a member of the lucky 2% and get the carbon fiber/satin VG-10 model! Could not be more pleased. Beautiful knife that feels great in my hand. Opens one-handed in a flash. Thanks, Massdrop!

What is the brand/model? Looks pretty sweet!
Massdrppr
That's a Boker Plus Burnley Kwaiken Folder Knife with the carbon fiber handle and VG-10 steel blade. Gotta say, in my hand it feels even sweeter than it looks!
Finally! After 4 Blue Box drops, I finally got an upgraded item.. Black G10/satin VG-10 model. Stoked.

Yes it is also

The grind on mine is uneven.
I just received the Black G-10 Handle / Satin VG-10 Blade and I have to say that it's heavier than I expected but the knife is stunning in person and is ridiculously easy to open and close one handed. Super happy that I joined this drop :)
Noir13
I have the G-10/VG-10 as well and I'm very happy with the design and blade as well. The only negative is the weight as you mentioned. But yea, fabulous build quality from Böker and great design from Burnley.
I got the upgraded orange handle version. I have absolutely no complaints. The fit and finish is excellent. Excellent buy for $100. I can open and close mine single handedly. Got the tactical pen as a bonus, have used it to open boxes but not to write with yet.
Very satisfied.
Poor quality. The grind on the blade isnt even or symmetrical. Very difficult to open one handed. I got the green handles. So far I haven't seen anyone post that they got anything different. Did anyone actually get an upgrade?
I've never had a knife that claimed to be a one handed opener that requires two hands to open I can not open it or safely close it w one hand. It's also heavy for its size, I think. Not real happy. Doubt I'll carry it as hoped. I lost on this drop and won't buy knifes from MD in the future. I wish the descriptions were written by users and not by the manufacturer, someone at massdrop that has held one in their hand. Pretty upset.
Muyperdido
This is what happens when the retail price is misrepresented to the customer and we don't get to put our hands on it and trust the seller is being truthful about the functionality of the product. Just like any retailer the descriptions are salesmanship forward at MD. I don't understand why even put a disk on it, I have full motion of my fingers, dont have arthritis, have very good dexterity and I can't open it.
I prefer just an outright purchase also, hoping for the orange handle received a green handle just like one I recently sold, oh well, I did get an "AWESOME" Boker cap upgrade! Sarcasm anyone!
I received the lowest end OD green knife. Pretty tough detent that doesn't seem to loosen with the main screw. It's hard to open one handed, even with the upgraded thumb disc. There's a flipper mod you can do by hacking off a corner of the top of the knife. Might be looking in to this
bren
Also, QC seems pretty shaky on these. My blade is bent(it's centered near the pivot, but rubs and rests on the side of the case every time I open/close the knife.) And it doesn't even close all the way. The tip sticks out just enough when closed to prevent me from carrying it. I really should have passed on this one. I hope massdrop can exchange this, I can't imagine this is working as intended.

Since this reads harsher than I meant it: Massdrop has excellent CS and they have been extremely helpful in getting this issue resolved.
Not for nothin', but once a ship date slips on a drop, maybe the massdrop staff could post an update? I mean, even "shipping to our facility was delayed" or "epic dog farts, emergency vet run. Will get these broken out, boxed, and shipped as soon as brownhound's steamy flatulent thrummings have subsided!" would make people feel the customer service love. Maybe you tried this earlier and it led to mob justice keyboard warrior style? Word.
when do they ship
Mr.Donut

OMG the detent on this is soooo fuckin strong. No way to open with one hand.I have the orange/AUS8 which is not a flipper.
StoeVV
can't loosen the screw?
So when are we likely to see shipments leave wherever?
Are any of these knives spring/switch blades. I am interested in buying, but I do not want assisted open.
after getting burned on the blades mystery box I am willing to bet massdrop going to mess this one up too.
Maybe it's just me, but I greatly dislike the drops that involve only a chance at getting the one I want. Just do a straight forward purchase.

So are you sitting out of this drop and try to locate the orange one you want elsewhere?
lellobeetle
Probably not, I don't need to spend my time and money that badly haha.
