Just got mine. Can someone clarify the difference between full-grain leather and genuine? I was under the impression that this belt was made w/ full grain leather but it is stamped "genuine leather" on the interior side of the belt. Thanks.

ed_rFull grain leather = the whole cut of leather top grain leather has had a layer or three shaved off. It's not low quality but full grain is considered better. Genuine leather usually is lowest and can mean leather slurry held together in a glue type matrix.
However in Europe/Italy they can stamp Genuine leather on something which is full grain. The low quality genuine leather designation is chinese/American.

I received two belts (black/brown) today and noticed something very odd. When the belt is used as a men's belt ( spare end on the left) the text on the inside of the belt is upside down. If worn as a women's belt (spare end on the right) printed text orientation is as it should be. Since this is a men's belt it looks like a factory seconds to me.. One may say that I am nitpicking, but it left me doubting if this drop was dumping of the seconds to unsuspecting customers who thought they are getting a great discount on first quality. I would not buy a belt stamped upside down if buying in store, unless it was heavily discounted. Nothing wrong with factory seconds, as long as they are advertised as such and priced accordingly. So, I kind of feel bad.
Something to ponder before buying a higher priced item next time. Is a drop really a way to get a great deal or it is just another example of "if it is too good to be true"....
Please can you check the printing on your belt and report back?

That's right. And if you flush it down the toilet it spins in the opposite direction.

What's the deal with brown only being available with a brass buckle? I'd like to join this drop, but I need brown with a silver buckle.

I got mine today. On the drop, these are listed as "Full Grain Italian Leather." The belts are stamped "Genuine Leather," which is the lowest grade of leather quality. Can you clarify?

Really digging yourself in, huh? Everyone can clearly see it's glued together and cracking. I get nobody cares enough to report you or file suit, but have some shame at least man.

WardExactly, look at that, I can get a $10 belt from my local market and wear it for a few years without cracking.

I don't think the British Belt Co. should be listing another drop when they haven't fulfilled their Massdrop x The British Belt Co Harness Leather Belt from back in July! I have paid and still waiting. I think they are waiting for the cow to die of natural causes.

Avoid purchasing this item. The description on the website indicates that the material is full-grain leather. I received it today and it's actually made of genuine leather (see attached photo). Genuine leather is of poorer quality and the belt will not last as long. I've already contacted Massdrop about a refund.
Edit: Apparently genuine leather is classified differently depending on where it's made! Noted for the future. :)

wangbotI have received top-grain leather products from companies which only sell those products which still say genuine leather on the underside. "Genuine Leather" is necessary as a classification in some areas or for selling purposes if I remember correctly. It's a very common point of alarm for people who don't know otherwise, since genuine leather is ALSO a name for a quality of leather in some cases. It's all a huge pain in the ass. This is why knowing brands is important.

wangbotGenuine leather just means that its contains leather. By FTC rules to use the term Genuine leather it must contain at least 80% leather that can be bonded or split. Look for the term full grain for a solid leather belts.

To answer the posts on the leather. This belt is made using Conceria Lloyd from Santa Sroce in Italy. We NEVER make belts using split or bonded leather. I apologies to Majedch for the problem with the bent received. This style uses the Lloyd leather split in two to feather edge and then recombine. The cracking has occurred because this leather contains very little oils and so when we skive down for the buckle it has cracked because the skive was to thick. If you contact us we will send you a new belt. As many thousands of buyers on MD will testify our quality is very good and we stand by our quality always

Hi Aramk, Just to clarify and put your mind at rest, the reason for the two leather straps being split and recombined is the top strap would be too thick to be used in its original form. We combine the top full grain leather with a nubuck lining providing a high quality finish to each belt. Please note our factory has been running for over 70 years specialising in leather belts, we have colleagues here that handcraft each belt with immense care. We have never had any issues in the past with out feather edge belts and if our customers are experiencing any problems with these belts then please ensure you get in touch at customer.service@thebritishbeltcompany.com Regards Harmie
