The Langdale is back!
After two highly successful runs of the Langdale Rucksack, we've decided to expand the offering to the weekender bag as well. This bag can carry quite a bit, and is made of the same Halley Stevenson waxed cotton from the UK. We have pretty good stock in all four colors this time (including the Dark Port that everyone wanted before!).

I've been looking for a bag that I can carry gym clothes and the like, that is nothing short of professional and sleek. This seems to be it, but can you tell me more about the intended function of this bag? It doesn't look like a gym bag.

jwestarbAs the name would imply this bag is a "weekender", meaning it's big enough for short trips. I think it would be overkill for just gym clothes, but you can always compare the dimensions to something you're familiar with to be sure.

Came looking for closure. That's a nice replacement for the Langdale. I came within a hair's width of buying the Vermilye weekender I linked earlier, but something just wouldn't let me. FYI here is a cheat sheet of my comparisons since (unfortunately I did a terrible job of staying $200 or less):
*Vermilye weekender is on Ebay under the RJL brand for only $300 http://www.ebay.com/itm/RJL-LTD-20-Waxed-Canvas-and-Brown-Horween-Chromexcel-Duffle-Bag-/111808155700?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368
* JW Hulme manufactures duffles (some virtually the same, some slightly modified) for Allen Edmonds at a lower price (possibly just a holiday promotion) e.g. http://www.allenedmonds.com/sale/accessories/leather-goods/weekend-satchel-carry-on-bag-by-jw-hulme-exclusive-for-allen-edmonds/SF501AE.html?dwvar_SF501AE_color=501AE#start=14

$1495 versus $836.50 (there are some nice & cheaper options too including waxed canvas)
* I almost went full crazy and bought this Coronado duffle. I may still regret not getting it but it seems slightly too small for my purposes. http://lodgegoods.com/products/coronado-horween-leather-boston-bag

* but I ended up going only half crazy and buying this Korchmar duffle in a darker pull up leather and a plaid lining not shown on their site, which is slightly larger than the Coronado but probably not as over-engineered. Allen Edmonds also sells some Korchmar duffles. Got mine for $518 shipped with coupon code Holiday2015 http://www.korchmar.com/index.php?level2=catalog&level3=item_detail&item_id=764

They also make this in waxed canvas. I called Korchmar and they were reluctant to let me know which tanneries they source from, but I *think* their pull up leather is Horween Dublin (same as Coronado) based on some of the verbiage used describing this bag. They only go so far as to say texas steer hide, oil (vegetable) tanned leather... all USA made. Their Twain duffle as they continue to call it seems to have evolved for the better over the years in terms of leather and provenance, so I'm pretty interested to see what I get next week.

sudoNice list! I'm a big fan of TBBC Langdale at this price point, but if you're looking for something that's an upgrade from it I recommend the Ernest Alexander Bedford. It's what I use :)

Will this bag suitable for airline carry-on, or will it need to be checked?

skofflawI'd also like to know the answer to this, I google-d it to no avail.

If I got the right product on their site, the dimensions are 35x55x25. Too big in raw numbers as a carry on for most airlines, but I'm pretty sure unless you stuff it full you can make it work.

LamorraIt's good for carry-on. TSA size requirements are: 22 x 14 x 9 inches and 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters. Bag is 13.7 x 21.7 x 9.8 in (35 x 55 x 25 cm). Perfect!
Can anyone attest to the quality of this weekender?
rhinocerosbladderHi Rihnocerosbladder, The 18oz cotton waxed canvas is from Scotland, the zippers are top quality and the leather is full grain. I will attest to the quality. Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers !

hmm are those the straps on the side that kinda fold the bag up in half ? Those are suppose to come off and on purpose I think, if you need extra room, you take off those straps then attach the shoulder strap on the freed up clip, but if you don't need extra room you can reattach the straps to the clip instead of the shoulder strap and just use the handles..

asdfmanAgreed. But the problem with mine is the top grain leather layers came apart, and the strap wouldn't stay fastened. Thanks MD for helping.

sudooh, I see what you are saying now.. looking at it again, if someone frequently switches between straps / no straps, the "slit" where the leather strap fasts on to the "stud" does seem like it would start to get "loose"

Well.. just got mine, and a button on the handle wrap is broken. I sent a message to Massdrop support. We'll see how things turn out I suppose...
I previously purchased the BB(elt)C's Kingston Satchel and was happy with that, and I fully understand that there is always a defect percentage for any company/product, so it's not that big of a deal to me at the moment, but just posting here in interest of full disclosure so others know of not just the good, but also the not so good part of my experiences..

I'm on the fence. I haven't heard back from support yet either. What about you?

Hiph-fuI decided to refund.. there was supposedly an unknown waiting period (estimated a month I think) for a replacement, but even if they had ready stock, I'm just not so sure how long this thing would last given what I've seen here now.. Like others, I am very impressed with the waxed canvas, but unfortunately if the locking mechanisms (buttons, clips, leather staps, etc) don't hold up then it doesn't really matter how long the canvas lasts, so I will be returning mine.
btw I am in IT a well (developer)

MSRP of $480 and Made in China!? LOL.....uhhh I'll pass.
SubtleHi Group, China does not denote poor quality. They have a great needle & have been manufacturing for a very long time.
The leather is full Grain, vegetable tanned, it is the best quality available. The 18 oz waxed cotton canvas is made in Dundee Scotland by Halley Stevenson est 1864. Even the hardware is top quality.
The waxed cotton canvas will age over time, becoming unique. This bag will give you years of wear.
