Are there any software issues with this DAP? Does it have a useable keyboard for entering Wi-Fi passwords, etc? Does it have a good search function? I am looking for real world opinions, not just professional reviewers opinions. does Tidal work well, or is it slow?
MJLavelleI owned this player. For this reduced price you get a marvelous sound, but a bit laggy UI. I was using only Spotify as streaming service and sometimes the player was not so responsive, but I could live with it. The onboard player with local files had no issues. Other issues to mention: the display is very low quality, but for me that was no problem. The jack sockets are a bit low quality too, durability issues may come up if you don't take care. All in all a fine player, I just moved to mobile + dac/amp as my portable rig.
Oh, the keyboard is usable too albeit a bit small. If you could handle early smartphones with this low screen size, than it is no issue.
MJLavelleTidal will be sluggish on this. The 1GB RAM makes third party apps sluggish in general. Beyond that, the unit is quite usable and if you're looking to just use the native player, you'll be quite happy. Balanced port sound quality is excellent.
Gianni85Thanks for the reply! One question regarding the keyboard - I read something about the keyboard for one of the DAPs I am researchin, and they said that it was a very old school cell phone style keyboard that was numeric only and that you had to press a number key a certain number of times to select a letter (ex: Press 1 once for “A”, twice for “B”, 3x for”C”). Is that how this one works? Or, is it just small?
MJLavelleSame since I have Tidal Master, but I ended up getting it anyways only because my massdrop universal IEMS are very sensitive and the 0.6 output impedance will work best. I still think $269 is a steal for this.
All other DAP's I've researched that have Tidal don't have the same sound sig as the Cayin N5ii and they cost up to +$200 more.. Most reviewers ended up liking the Cayin sound, but preferred the OS/Interface and beefy internals of more expensive DAPs.
I guess it just depends what you plan on using with your DAP - GL!
MJLavelleIt's just small, the device uses android OS and has a proper keyboard.
btw. Fiio is just coming out with their new M9 device. That is really exciting at 300$. Although I didn't find any reviews yet.
bluewrecKQuestion. My not apply to you, but do you know if you are able to download Tidal music for offline listening onto the SD cards if you have any in the device?
timeextendedSorry for the late response, but I actually picked up the upgraded version of this N5iiS for $430 through aliexpress. The issue is that you can't save your Tidal offline to an SD Card. It will only allow internal storage. N5iiS actually has 64gb of internal storage.
This issue seems to happen across all android DAPs that have Tidal access. Seems like a limitation of the Custom Android and how the Tidal app works imo.
MJLavelleSometimes it's lagging a bit, even with newest firmware. But nothing what I couldn't tolerate, regarding price vs sound quality output. Keyboard is usable enough for me ( for that size of display). Tidal - I don't know, Spotify works well.
