The TF/microsd slots for the device support 400gb cards. I happened to have a 512Gb microsd card, so I put that in on a lark. It was recognized and listed as such. I don't have anywhere near that much in music files to test actual performance that high, but it is useful to know.
Early adopter here - got mine on Amazon when it came out. Was very disappointed. A lot of my FLACs were distorted. I finally gave up on it - do not know if they ever fixed the distortion issue. If you poke around enough you will fine a lot of people had problems with the headphone jacks breaking since they were made of plastic. I noticed they came out with a newer version. Wonder if they fixed all these issues.

I have an N5ii and am active on the N5ii thread on Head-fi and this the first time I've ever heard of this issue. Have you tried contacting anyone from cayin's support regarding the issue?
Why isn't there a review section on this? I've come to a situation in life where I need a good DAP and this one has my attention, but I want to read some listening impressions and I can't find any reputable reviews on it.
So, I guess this wouldn't be the best DAP to choose for my Sennheiser HD 650 if I didn't also want to have to carry a separate amp? Most of the time I just use my Noble 3 universal IEMs, but sometimes I like to crank it into my HD 650s for that more visceral bass feel. I need to find a DAP to replace my LG V10 as a music player before it finally croaks. I can't afford to buy a thousand dollar upgrade phone that won't let me replace the battery after it stops taking a full charge in a year.

The HD 650s are not what most would consider a headphone that one would use when out and about town. Portable hi-res players are designed to be used when away from home therefore iems, or more portable headphones with low ohms would be a better choice. The Cayin would still work at home but if you want the best from your 650s you'll need a boost. I use the Fiio Aspen and it works very well. There are many others that'll do the trick also.
AudioJet
Yeah, I'm just sad no one seems to make an all-in-one DAP/amp to cover high impedence studio headphones and notoriously-power-hungry planar magnetics. Truthfully I haven't put a lot of time into digging through specs on all of the DAPs out there, but I get a little bit disheartened every time I see a DAP that wouldn't be able to handle my HD 650s as well as my phone has.
Missed this some how - what was it going g for?
Can you store downloaded Spotify songs on the SD card?
My take on the Cayin N5ii on Soundphile Review: https://www.soundphilereview.com/reviews/cayin-n5ii-review-1642/
Hello...I had several iPods for as long as I can remember and from the features that made my relationship with them very interesting I have to mention play counts, ratings and the associated smart play lists that made use of them characteristics. I would like to know whether this device has the capability to change ratings and keep track of play counts. Maybe something in the line of iTunes play lists also? I looked at Sony with no luck and the apple iPod is too small for my needs right now...besides, no flac. Thank you very much

Does this play laserdiscs?
Grev
Yes. But I'm not sure you'd necessarily want to. I present to you: Laserdisc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfUsj0JvNmQ
I have a used one I'd like to sell if anyone is interested

I have a dumb question. Does the Cayin N5ii take iOS downloads from Apple computers?

don't spread misinformation, all audio formats supported by Apple are Open Source
FrostyP
I read it from a sales rep. It could have been an old reply but I wasn't trying to spread false info.

Ah, multiple pages. That's tricky. I'll have to look again.

i'm very glad that my total ignorance (i dont have a single vinyl to be honest) draws so many insightful comments. Many thanks and keep them coming :)

The same album released to CD and vinyl traditionally was mastered twice. One master recording, for the CD (and, more importantly, radio) frequently had compressed dynamic range. In other words, the difference between the volume of the quiet parts and the loud parts was substantially reduced. The vinyl release, on the other hand, was pressed from a master recording with full dynamic range. Quiet passages remained quiet relative to the louder passages. This naturally led to vinyl releases sounding better than CD releases, despite the CD being a vastly superior medium for playback and storage. Unfortunately, it also led to the widespread misconception that vinyl was inherently superior to digital music.
Massdrop always claims that they aren't used as a dumping ground but in this case I have to question this since this device was replaced by the N5iis. Sure seems to me like someone is looking to get rid of old inventory. Incidentally, the last time that I checked, Spotify and Tidal weren't "devices".... they were either "apps" or "services" depending on the operating system. You might want to fix the description of what this thing actually supports.

In contrast, mojor reviews tells that there is not signifcant sound quality difference. It is about the UI, hardware performance of the device. I used N5ii. I wanted to use it as a transport to my DAC/amplifier. But there is still noise on USB-OUT which prevents you from using it as a transport. There are still some software problems which have not been solved. I do not recommend N5ii at all. Spend a little more and buy Ibasso DX150 instead of it.
GuyInPittsburgh
Agreed!
I bought this earlier this year. But the flash on it died in less than 2 weeks. Good features, solid build, great sound especially for this price. I ended up going with something a little cheaper and more reliable (non-android).
Damn, right after I bought a shanling m2s. Hope I didn't scream up.
I’m a musician and am wondering.... can I download an audio app that slows down pieces would it be able to work with this and the music on it?

I know the apps I like just not sure if they'd work on the player... But that would be the ultimate practice tool if the app and player play nice together!
OakParkMusicGuy
My N5II is sometimes lagging. Yvonne live latest firmware , so... In your case I would rather go for "S" version of it. Otherwise great device I would buy it again especially for this Price Tag. Sounds amazing with Oriolus Forsteni or AKG K545.
Better than opus 1?
Are there any software issues with this DAP? Does it have a useable keyboard for entering Wi-Fi passwords, etc? Does it have a good search function? I am looking for real world opinions, not just professional reviewers opinions. does Tidal work well, or is it slow?

Does the SD card problem happens to Spotify as well? That's really a dealbreaker for me.
yogiwp
I don't understand exactly, what u mean your question. I'm using Spotify only occasionally and such way, that there is no Sd card involved.
Very good price for one of the bests DAP. I've had it for a year now and I certainly not regret my purchase! More than 400 GB of music!!!! Pure sound option!!!!! Perfect with my I-Basso IT01: A dream!
FILSON
This looks like such a nice player!! Everything except Bluetooth and who really needs that. I just bought Astell & Kern 70 Mk II and kinda wish I had seen this first. I mean Screen installed and cases wowow.
For IEM's is this a good choice for someone that owns an iPhone 6S Plus as primary portable music device?
Whenever I switch between the iPhone and my laptop I do hear a difference since I have to play at 70% on the phone vs 28-33% volume on my laptop.
Has anyone used this with Apple Music for streaming and storing offline? I’m concerned about sluggishness and wonder if anyone has had issues with offline storage. Also, wish it had a newer version of Android to future proof streaming services like apple music and tidal. Would hate to see an iosate requiring a newer version of Android.
Eldss
It's an android so apple music probably won't work that well...
I have this DAP and love it. For the price, it is an incredible deal. With the latest firmware updates, it functions really well and the native player is fairly intuitive (at least for my use). Sound is excellent with a wide sound stage, slight warmness, and the details you'd expect with a SABRE DAC chip. A little sluggish in some areas like running Tidal / Spotify but with a little patience, even those work fine. Lots of extra expansion room for storage and for this price I really wouldn't be able to complain for what you're getting. This little guy is all about the balanced port too so if you're buying this, make sure you plan on using 2.5mm balanced out!
Only thing I'm really curious about is how long it takes to re-scan the damn SD card(s) after adding/deleting stuff from it/them and re-inserting into the player.
I just recently got an Astell&Kern AK70 MKII and my only real gripe so far is that it seems to take longer and longer to re-scan the media after I've added more stuff to the card. It can be infuriating if I forget to eject from my computer and re-insert into the DAP before my walk home, and then have to wait the ~15 minutes it's currently taking to re-scan before I can listen again...
Other than that, I have a few minor complaints but over all it's a very solid player; however, if someone should point me in the right direction of another DAP with a better UI, I might reconsider...

How about playlist support?
Jeez Louise android 5.1? Why not just go for Kitcat! LOL! Appears there is no high resolution Bluetooth capabilities either a? Intriguing but, not good enough!

Same here! If not that I think I would join the drop.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
What is the warranty and who will honor it? Where does it need to be shipped to for repair work and who pays shipping?

I know this is an old comment, but this right here is why I don't buy more stuff on Massdrop. Especially the fact that you can't return stuff. The money you save here may cost you if you don't like what you bought or if it breaks and you can't figure out how to get it fixed.
dingie
Worth repeating ('cuz I've said it before)--I've never had an issue with returns on MD. I have no complaints about MD Customer Service, and I'm a guy who's not generally shy about complaining!
