Alright, these were fairly unknown. There were only a few reviews... but those reviews WERE quite positive! In one of my moments of not over researching and instead being a bit impulsive, I bought a pair. Fantastic. Though they were a bit thin sounding out of my Creative Labs X7 (the less powerful than 50W speaker taps, non-LE edition), they have been solid and rich sounding with my entry level but powerful Yamaha AVR and my PS Audio Sprout II. The positives: the leaf-planar tweeters are indeed special and very highly resolving with low distortion, while the mid-woofers (the common electro-dynamic, though Chane’s own design here) are quite a step ahead in clarity of my warm Polk Audio Monitor II speakers and even the comparative cold Pioneer SP-BS22-LR. While they don’t have the visual interest of the Andrew Jones designed SP-BS55-LR (lets just call that the BS55 from now on, eh?) and they aren’t as cheap, these plain black boxes do suit a modest entertainment room or TV stand quite well and manage to sound both richer and clearer than the hyped BS55. For bookshelf speakers, they extend well into the bass range, and are wonderful while watching TV, but for movies or music you might still appreciate a subwoofer. As I went from being a roommate in a house to moving into two apartments with shared walls over the years, I also greatly appreciate that Chane included foam plugs to muffle the bass response and push fewer low frequency effects into my neighbor’s space (never received a complaint!). One of my most memorable early experiences with them was watching Birdman (with Michael Keaton). There was a long scene with no cuts (or really well-hidden cuts) where the handheld camera follows the actor from stage to backstage hallways and spinning around while Keaton’s character was outside, and the speakers were remarkably good at “disappearing” and allowing the soundstage cues to seem to come from even wider beyond how wide apart the speakers were placed on my stands. Downsides? Well, they look plain, though the front is a bit unusual if you take the grill off. I wish they had a cherry wood or even just a walnut colored finish, but I know many people prefer all black. I also consider it a downside that they’re discontinued, but I believe Chane is still selling the successors. I wish I had enough money to have purchased a center speaker and maybe a full surround setup, but even after at least 4 years owning these and a few cases of FOMO with ELAC speakers and others, I still feel so pleased with these every time I get a chance to use them. Their value is strong and IMO an easy pick over the Polk and Pioneer speakers – even if they were still a bit of a stretch for a low budget, they have continued to satisfy and satiate upgraditus even after I moved into a larger space :)
