I don't have a golden ear, but I'm sensitive to background hiss. I sort of painted myself into a corner when I bought (through Massdrop) the Campfire Audio Nova IEMs. They became my nicest, but by far most sensitive, IEMs.
There is noticeable hiss when I use them on my phone or computer, either with no DAC (of course), or using a GeekOut IEM, DACPort Slim HD, or DACPortable. All decent portable DACs in their own right
Would the Mojo eliminate the hiss? Obviously I see it has a crazy low THD. I believe that is the stat to care about for hiss, correct? If it would eliminate the hiss I would like to get it and end my search for a great portable DAC. Any help would be appreciated. Obviously this would be an expensive purchase, and I don't really want to buy it just for pure sound quality reasons--my other DACs are fine for my needs (except the slight hiss).

patpolkI haven't had any hissing using my mojo. I've tried them with multiple headphones, and phones. No issues. The DAC is very well grounded. The hissing you are describing seems to be more related to the headphone them selves no? There maybe something wrong with those headphones...

crazylegsTo me it doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with the Novas--just that they are too sensitive for my equipment. Perhaps "buzzing" is too strong of a word. It's just a tiny bit of interference-type noise when it should be completely silent. It's like when you put a decent pair of earphones into a crappy PC headphone jack and hear background noise, but in my case it's a bit milder. And it seems related to the sound source, because, for instance, there's a little bit of a buzz when the image changes quickly on the phone screen (like going from a very dark image to a very bright one). Also, the amount of noise varies a little bit when I use different DACs.
So again, if the signal for the Mojo is super clean, I would be interested in picking one up and hopefully being done searching for my ideal portable DAC. I am just pretty uninformed, so I'm trying to make sure it will do the trick before spending the money. I'm not even positive that THD is the correct piece of info for me to be looking at for the particular problem I'm trying solve.

patpolkI doubt It has anything to do with the DACs, what you describe is more like an IM noise, in other words your IEM acts as an "antenna" and "amplifies" noise that is not part of the signal. Shielding issue more likely.

TheHunThanks for your response! That sounds very reasonable to me, because it sounds a lot like (very slight) electrical interference. I guess I still thought that meant that a DAC with a clean, isolated power supply would solve the problem. You are saying it won't, huh? What can I do to solve the problem if it is due to shielding?

patpolkI'm not saying that isolated power supply can't solve it, but that has nothing to do with any DAC's quality per se. The issue is not exactly widespread, and as others said could be a problem with your IEM. Basically it's impossible to predict if you would experience this with the Mojo or not.

TheHunPerhaps I'll try to reach out to Campfire Audio to see if it is a known issue on their end. This whole time I've been thinking of it as a problem with the quality of the sound processing. I feel like I've been on a little bit of a wild goose chase. Why do makers of DACs advertise "pitch black backgrounds" if they don't decrease background noise? Oh well. Thanks again!

patpolkI have Campfire Andromeda with Mojo. There is still some hiss, but much less than any of my sources. Best demo one to see if the amount of hiss is tolerable, and also don't use a phone to feed the Mojo, the RF interference is bad.
You can mod your mojo like I did. I had an RF shield installed inside, and the hiss is also slightly decreased from new capacitors & 3.5mm plug.
