Hey folks, I'm not associated with Drop but I am a product developer for a company that makes things in Asia. Just a few bits of information about MFG in China: Every year there's a national holiday at the end of Jan-mid February — Chinese New Year. The country effectively shuts down. This year it was from Jan 25-Feb 4th(ish). The problem is that the Corona virus required the Chinese Govt to delay factory openings until Feb 10th. To re-open a factory the govt has to do a full inspection of the factories. Which pushes MFG starting back up to Feb 17-24th. At that point there's a mass scramble to book cargo vessels, plane shipment, etc to catch up with expected delivery dates in the rest of the world (spring is coming and POs have been placed for at least 90 days). There are big companies (like REI, Walmart, etc) waiting for billions of dollars in goods. (I'm dealing with this now for 3 brand new products that are supposed to be released in the Spring). My point is that some higher-up at drop probably hasn't explained this to whoever is in charge of customer service and no one is explaining just how effed up MFG is right now . . . GLOBALLY. That doesn't excuse Drop, it's shit customer service and a great reason to never use them again. I'm just trying to give ya'll a bit of context about what's going on.
Bought this from Knifecenter a few weeks ago, it's listed at $38 and with shipping/tax totaled $42 and arrived in a few days. If you want to save $6 buy it here, but if you want to receive it more quickly go to Knifecenter or BladeHQ.
It's a relatively long and thick blade but is still nimble in the hand, and makes for a really great slicer. It's stonewashed, which should help mitigate any rust issues from the D2. The pocketclip is excellent, it's deep carry and secure, with a window to remove the screws if you want to switch sides, but it's tip-up only. I have it in OD green with an orange backspacer and washers, the ridges on the spacer give a nice grip to the pinky part of my palm and there's a decent lanyard hole if you want one. The backspacer also has a nice point if you need to hit something with it I suppose, but that's not my jam.
I'd prefer a little more texture in the G10 of the handle, but it's still pretty grippy to the touch. The deep curve of the handle means my medium-sized hands grip the knife extremely securely, and the flipper acts as a good guard, I don't worry about slipping up into the blade while cutting. Overall the handle is excellent and feels like a knife way above the price point.
As I mentioned above the blade is a keen slicer, and because the blade is relatively thick (for my liking) the tip isn't super fragile since it has a good amount of steel behind it. It comes damn sharp out of the box, I accidentally poked myself with the tip a few days after receiving it and bled like a stuck pig! The D2 is holding its edge well, I don't do edge tests with rope or any of that nonsense, but no dulling from apples, fiberboard, tape, etc for a little over a month of use.
The flipping is very smooth and responsive, and since the blade is pretty heavy and thick it has a lot of oomph when opening or closing, so keep your fingers clear. No complaints on the lock, it engaged well from the first opening with no missed grabs.
My only critique is that I wish it had some light jimping on the spine and the top of the handle, but it doesn't really need it. It really feels like a much more expensive knife and I'd highly suggest it.
MattackXIIIMe either, I’m done. Between their horrible customer service and lack of selection I don’t see any reason to come here anymore. Seems like every Outdoor product is just an item from their rotation of collaborations with other companies. Sucks too because they used to offer some good deals.
Nice!
good lookin’ out w/ the allocation. I know anytime you guys order G-10 folders and natural G-10 is an option that it’s most likely the one I’ll want.
Humor me; were they surprised by this request?
reswrightNot surprised it is the most popular option, but they were a little surprised at how quickly it moved. It's my favorite of the bunch, which is why I put it as the main product image ;)
Cool looking with the natural scales. Curious as to why it's only $36, no mention of the type of steel. Is this caca? Anyone else know anything about this?
stevefury68Like @emogoo it's listed as coming soon on BHQ but they have it on Knifecenter, that's where I got it. Steel is D2 and is holding up well so far.
Digdug77This is what I received from customer support:
We're experiencing a delay with the vendor in getting these units shipped out. We anticipate that these will be shipped before March 6th, 2020. Once the item is picked up and scanned by the courier, you will receive an email with tracking information.
SethGYeah I really thought that was the point of Drop, too, but not so much anymore, it's just a place to dump stock, often dated stock...not at all the original stated purpose of drop, as is drop shipping, as in it's all a big LIE
