Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. I ordered this to be delivered to the UK, but did not realise that it would take two and a half weeks for the order to be dispatched. I also assumed that the $33 shipping must include import duties, as the similar shipping figures on amazon and ebay include import duties.
I couldn't find any of this information by browsing the site itself, but only through a reply from customer support where they provided links. I'm out of the country from 30th March to the 3rd May, and won't be able respond to the request to pay import duty. The order will then be returned to you for refund after three weeks of being held at customs.
I want to cancel my order and be given a full refund. I am not happy to wait for customs to return the product and to be denied to be refunded $33 in postage costs. I'm now aware from links provided by email that orders cannot be cancelled once the drop is complete, but it seems unlikely that the original vendor has yet dispatched their order to your warehouse, and you will have to amend your order with them. If that means the drop price is not allowed by them, then I imagine the other four buyers orders will also have to be dropped.
I'm sure it's in both our interests to resolve the issue before the order is shipped for your warehouse. I consider the lack of information on your site to be grossly misleading and I will go to considerable effort to contest the payment with paypal and visa if you don't want to resolve this amicably.
