Support for Alternative Layouts
This is a summary of how alternative layouts have been supported by kits such as Colevrak and Homing. It is not a discussion of alt layout performance and development, but if that interests you I highly recommend starting with Pascal Getreuer’s A guide to alt keyboard layouts (why, how, which one?). It’s a concise and comprehensive overview with links to some great sites that go deeper. He also has a separate Links about keyboards page. The Keyboard layouts doc he recommends explains layout goals and metrics in detail, summarizing the alt layouts discussed here as well as more than one hundred others. Sculpted-profile The majority of custom keycap sets are sculpted-profile (Cherry, SA, MT3, KAT, etc. - more on profiles generally here) so let’s start there. Because each row has a unique keycap shape, alt layouts require a unique keycap for each legend that moves off its QWERTY row. "is this one standard enough that it will be easily customizeable in the future with say different colors or profiles?" -Yep. Here's what my Code TKL looks like right now (attached pics) "Are there many Key caps that would be compatible with this board as well as the LEDs?" -Finding keycaps that are made specifically for backlighting is more difficult, but do exist. I imagine they'll get more popular as more people are putting LEDs on their boards, but right now the best keycap sets aren't really made with backlighting in mind. "Secondly, can anyone explain the use of the dip switches on the bottom of the board?" -They're used to change options directly on the keyboard instead of having to do them in your computer. Things like choosing between Qwerty, Dvorak, and Colemak layout and also whether you're using it on a Mac or not(that covers the first 2 switches. The third dip switch is whether you want your Caps Lock to be Caps Lock or another Ctrl key. 4th turns scroll lock into an OS key lock. If you're a Windows gamer this is nice. 5th is enable/disable the OS keys. 6th is to decide between using a Menu Key or another Fn key. Lastly, are the keys themselves customizeable, and if so, is this done in software or some other way? For instance, would I be able to have some of the F keys work as media keys?" - Nope. I don't believe any WASD Keyboards (which Code is one of) do any kind of programming on the board. This can be done in software, but in that case any keyboard could do it. I think that covers everything, haha. I really love my Code with blues. Cannot recommend highly enough.
