It seems the K7XX series are regarded as "too bright" for use with the X7. Are there any more compatible recommendations for headphones to pair with this particular unit?
I have a pair of K702s mated to a Xonar Essence ST, and the fact that my card is PCI has caused me problems when considering upgrade paths. An external solution like this would be ideal for me, but I don't want to end up with ear-splitting highs as a result. I would be willing to make changes as far as headphones and amp/dac, but would prefer to still have virtual surround for FPS games, as it is a lifesaver.

PowerGloveSo I'm not sure where the "too bright" messaging is coming from. I'm using a K7XX (and also a 702) with the X7 on a regular basis and it sounds great. Definitely not ear-splitting at all. At least in my opinion...but as with anything audio...your mileage may vary! Both of these headphones are used in testing the X7 BTW =)
The convenience of having a hardware accelerated card without worrying about having to have a PCIe slot is really what sits at the core of the X7 and E5 products.

PowerGloveWhy wouldn't you replace that Xonar Essence ST w/ an Essence STX II? That puts you on a great PCIe card solving the mobo upgrade path issue you have w/ the PCI version & will do it for 1/2 the price of this.

novemsolAny number of reasons really. This is USB so it'll work with laptops This works with consoles. This has integrated Bluetooth. This has an internal amp and can power bookshelf speakers, etc. It's a pretty significant usability upgrade from an internal card.

GoodlySoundsThe person I was responding to was complaining that he liked his audiocard, but was limited by the fact he has the PCI version. That is actually a very good audiocard, and it has a PCIe version which would resolve his mobo upgrade path issue. I wasn't looking for use cases outside of his listed use case.

DigitalRonynI know this is an old post, but when using the k7XX with the X7 can you safely use high gain and would you recommend it?
