This edition is supposed to be exclusive to local independent brick and mortar game stores to help them compete with big box and online retailers that are underselling them out of existence. It’s shameful that Massdrop is selling this. If you’re able to, please support your local gaming community by buying this from your LGS instead of Massdrop.
elionWhen I tried to get a special edition of Volos Guide two years ago, neither of my local shops knew about it till I told them, and the one I DID reserve a copy with (they said they were only taking reservations) neglected to tell me it was a 24hr hold and sold my copy before I came in on the weekend to pick it up. I'm all for supporting local shops but NOT poor management. I'm glad to see this on Massdrop.
worrymonsterThis actually happened to a friend of mine as well. The next store he went to was up charging the book to absurd prices. Although these books are "for" LGSs some can be dicks about it.
Despite scores of complaints about damaged books, the exact same books in this latest drop were packaged exactly the same, with no proper cushioning, and my order is damaged, just like everyone else’s. IDIOTS are running this show. :-(
I recommend you NOT buy this if you want it for the collectibility. If you’re just going to use them, you might as well save the extra expense and get the same set on Amazon with the “standard “ art.
captainHope this gets more visibility. I ordered with the first wave and books arrived damage. My fault for trying to save on collectible goods I guess.
I slammed the buy button because I was just considering this as a birthday present but now see a bunch of complaints about damaged product. Can we get assurances that the product will be packaged correctly?
Sorry to hear that. I think they're still solid for other stuff, just not collectible goods. As for Amazon, they're pretty good about item exchange if the items you ordered are from Amazon and not other sellers. I was able to replaced a hard covered book this way.
I would love to get these because I'm honestly just a sucker for good-looking book covers, but what guarantee do I have that I'm not going to end up with the same experience as seemingly everyone else here and have to deal with returns and customer service? Has the persistent quality issue finally been taken care of or are those in charge just hoping people don't read the discussions page?
This site has gone down the drain the last couple of years. Which is mostly the reason why they did the aesthetics and name change recently. I wouldn’t bother with the site anymore to be honest.
RegulithAgainst my better judgement I gave into the temptation and ordered the last drop, and I seem to have lucked out. The package arrived in kind of rough shape (very scuffed up, battered corners), and inside was absolutely zero packaging besides the shrink-wrapped collector's box. The first thing I noticed is that the DM screen is about 1/8th of an inch shorter than the books and sits at one end of the box, which meant the corners of the box on that end got pretty beat up due to the extra space. The books themselves, however, are in almost perfect condition, which is really all I cared about. A couple of the corners are ever so slightly bent if you look closely, but it's not like I was intending to keep these pristine forever. I gave them all a flip-through and there don't seem to be any binding or printing issues. I guess the dice rolls extend to the merchandise itself, too.
Just a heads-up-- you're better off getting the foil editions. You can get the whole set cheaper than this version typically, and personally, I had a bad experience with this set (though I ordered on Amazon rather than Massdrop).
I got this set 3 times brand new, and returned each. Even when packing was done nicely for the second and third, still had issues. I think some of the "shipping damage" people complain about may actually be the result of either poor quality control or mishandling by manufacturers.
According to other reviews, this problem seems to be a rather prevalent one-- with book conditions being VERY hit or miss, leaning towards the latter.
Of course, YMMV. If you're still interested in this set, I hope you the best.
