A fixed blade that doesn’t follow convention, the Defcon TD004 sports an aggressive blade for myriad outdoor tasks. Shaped like the head of a spear, the blade is made of air-hardened D2 steel Read More
I rate knives on how well they WORK.
Anybody who has followed me much around here probly knows by now that I am in horses... and when it comes to knives, I am well into brawn over beauty.
This is a chunky spunky meaty knife with an EXCELLENTLY sharp blade, and those teeth on there are perfect for duty among the hay bales and for cutting cord, rope, twine, smaller branches, and even small gauge metal wire.
It has great heft, so you certainly know it's there, and the handle is very well balanced against the weight of the blade.
The absolutely full tang is 6 mm thick, (total handle thickness = 19 mm). And the thing can be disassembled for clean up and maintenance, should it be required.
I often favour fixed-blade knives, ESPECIALLY for work outside, because I don't have to worry about fidly mechanisms, grit and moisture inside the liner, flippers that don't, well....flip. Some gaudy, catches-on-your-pocket, ClunkyCosmetics folder will NOT win the day for me. It has to WORK.
I like the blade length, the easy-yet-weighty feel in the hand, the grippy scales that limit the slip factor to almost nil. I carry it in my back pocket every time I head out to work around the barn now.
When this drop is ever offered again, I will definitely be buying another, which probly says it all.
STOUT! Bladestock is thiiick. I thought it looked dull to me at first but it passed the shaving hairs on hand test. $50??!! D2 steel ! A great sheath with an awesome tech lock!! Be warned, the jimping on spine is aggressive af. This was a great buy @ $50. I'm not a fan of DEFCON in big letters center of blade though. But for $50, I've already gotten over it. This is a small fixed blade imo but it is very heavy. I like that. Only downside to this blade.. NO PROTECTIVE COATING ON BLADE . D2 steel does alot right but is prone to rusting if not oiled regularly and its exposed to moisture. All in all, this edged tool is worth the fifty bucks.
this is a solid hefty blade i wont worry about breaking it when doing farm chores. the D2 steel should hold up to anything i can throw at it. i plan on mounting the Kydex case directly to my ATV so i always have the knife close by
jfw2yes.
we farmies KNOW knives and what they should do.
:)
I might have loved the sheath to have a belt clip on the side, but that didn't dull my rating.
;)
May need sharpening if you like your blades super sharp. Ergonomic grip, relatively thick blade. No sign of damage after rough use, not the best edge retention. For the price it is quiet good.
