what's special about it?

yep, and there are already boards out there with magnetic/customisable top plates
Seems you're trying rather hard to make your point, with such specific/anecdotal examples. I would say that your overall view of this product is not based in perhaps the most important factors that were considered by Drop: economics and simplicity. This keyboard line is the result of their vision, which was based on feedback from this community. A keyboard comprised of its stock components - including its foam - yields its sound and feel. Period. Of course, there's the affect of a keyboard's specific switches and keycaps. Without identical switches and keycaps across all sound tests, they will not be standardized. So we can only go off of the sound test from a keyboard's stock configuration... which Drop has provided for the CSTM80. This isn't complicated. Drop has engineered a keyboard for the casual keyboard enthusiast, with multiple customizable (optional) products available at launch. Want 'different layout support'? Buy a different keyboard from another company. The CSTM80 has been properly advertised, as a complete set of foam comes pre-installed. Proposing that Drop "offer sound tests for multiple foam configurations" is an unreasonable request unless they offer multiple types of foam. Are you suggesting they upload sound tests with each single piece of the stock foam removed... all of the possible combinations? Want to know what the keyboard sounds like with different foam, without select pieces of foam, or no foam at all... and with different keycaps or switches than come stock? Look elsewhere or find out for yourself. As I'm sure you're aware, first-hand experiences are ideal if you really want to learn about something.

i naturally assumed this was all aluminum until i saw that aluminum top was dramatically more... and noticed the other tops were plastic. is this entire case plastic??????????
right... adding a weight, to a plastic keyboard. a plastic board that slides together, and flexes and creaks under stress and torque. then the matter of it being plastic... and costing $99 for a barebone board without a shell.

mdotPlastic does not equal to bad or creaky, Tiger80 Lite is all plastic and it sounds and feels better than %95 of metal boards out there.

Hey everyone! We are beyond excited to launch the new CSTM80 keyboard today! CSTM80 is in-stock and ready to ship—no wait to try it out. We also offer no-hassle returns if you are unsatisfied with the board for any reason. I recommend checking out the Studio Stories for CSTM80 if you haven't already and are interested in the development process and learning a bit more about features/design. ▪️ CSTM80 Under the Hood ▪️ Matching the Keyboard to the Battlestation ▪️ Gasket and Sound Lastly, BadSeedTech just released a video detailing his thoughts and impressions (along with his own sound tests of various configurations). ▪️ DROP Took Notes! CSTM80 First Impressions Let us know any questions you might have in the comments and we'll do our best to answer! :)

HoffmanMysterAny hopes of getting a 75% version? like the Keychron K2 Pro ?
kYzzoWe plan/hope to release all of the popular form factors, yes. The next one to launch will be CSTM65, which should be in early 2024. After that, both 75% and 1800 would be in contention for the next layout (not set in stone yet).

I know I’m in the minority here but if they made an Apple version for this, I’d get it in a heartbeat. I don’t know much about keyboards anyway 🤷🏻
Remember to either hit - FN + Left Ctrl + O to swap all the OS hotkey locations to match MacOS or use our keyboard configurator and choose the Mac layout. This way the keyboard will match exactly how the Mac keyboard works.

Can't recall if it was mentioned already, but is there software it will work with out of the box (e.g. QMK, VIA, etc.)?

clickingwhaleOut of the box, works with our Drop Keyboard Configurator application (which uses QMK's XAP interface): https://drop.com/talk/9382/how-to-configure-your-ctrl-keyboard If you want to switch to VIA, no sweat, our configurator app has bundled-in VIA firmware (see post above) with bundled Vial firmware coming soon.

Will the front legend shine through keycaps be available on their own? They look amazing and if they're anything like the skylight series keycaps I'd swap out the caps on my Drop CTRL.
South-facing shinethrough keycaps would be ideal for the Sense75. White and black iterations, please!
mattrisYou want it you got it! Black and White versions of the DCL keycaps are now available for preorder.
Will this support different layouts like splitback space or split spacebars? Or is it only a standard TKL layout? *Edit: Made my comment a day too early, lol. Looks like layout is not customizable. I am seriously surprised that Drop keeps releasing new "Custom" keyboards that don't support multiple keyouts/key configurations.

TopreLoveUnfortunately not for this one. It's on our radar (not roadmap, yet) though and would be possible with a PCB/plate update; will pass your interest along. 👍

Will there be options available like full size as well as TKL? Volume knob option? Sounds like we can already choose between plate options, since POM and brass were talked about, and the person in charge mentioned stock config is poly. Will there be FR4 option as well? Carbon Fiber? Will we also have an options for different switches so we don't have to buy a whole extra set of the specific switches we want and trash whatever they come with?
(Edited)
EniGmA1987Stock plate will be Polycarbonate as you mentioned, with Brass, FR4, Carbon Fiber, and POM available as modifications. The two stock switch options will be Gateron Yellow KS3 (linear option) and Gateron Brown Pro 3.0 (tactile option). If neither of those fits your fancy, it will be available in barebones configuration to build to your preference. As for a full size offering, I know that additional sizes are in the works to launch in the coming year or so (65% next, not sure on a timeline for full size). Knobs I'll have to defer to @YanboWu - maybe could be considered for a future revision if there's enough interest?

HoffmanMysterThanks for the info! Ill have to hope a full size eventually comes out :) Next run you should consider switching to the Ink Black V2's instead of the yellow. Same linear style, same actuation force, and travel increases to 4mm which is the same travel as most other switches including the Browns.

Will this have south facing LEDs to prevent clearance issues with Cherry profile Keycaps?
zevFernYes, it’s south facing.
