There's just no simple explanation as to why a man carries a pocket knife in today's concrete jungles and electronic circuses. Sure, there's the "always be prepared" line of discussion, and the "never leave the house without it" reasoning, but the answer is probably more complex...which is not exactly a word often used to describe us by our female counterparts Read More

The knife kit is definitely for novices, I wouldn't use that stone on anything of mine except machetes and axes.

Anyone know the grits on the knife whetstone?

moonfirespamAll I can find is that they label one side "coarse" and the other "fine." I guess that's simply stating the obvious, but judging by the picture I don't think you'd want to be using the coarse side on a regular basis. It looks pretty similar my 150 grit stone that I use strictly for reprofiling edges since it removes so much material.
I'd estimate the other side is somewhere between 400 - 600 grit, which is about what you'd want to get a nice "working edge," meaning plenty sharp but nowhere close to something you'd want to shave with ;) Personally, I'm an OCD knife collector who takes even brand new knives to the stone till they have a polished edge - finished on a leather strop. That way if you keep up with maintenance you really never need anything more aggressive than 800 grit to work back up to a mirror finish.
