Product Description
The Fällkniven FK-A1Z A1 is a fixed-blade survival knife that’s built for heavy-duty outdoor use. Backed by over 30 years of expertise in Swedish hunting and fishing tradition, this wilderness knife is tailored for maximum grip and control in harsh environments Read More
That's strange because I'm viewing the video above which has several parts. The 2nd part has the man driving his tip into metal with force and there was no damage. Was part of your camping duties holding the knife in the campre fire embers, i.e. using it to cover a fire. This may ruin the heat treat which would make the knife more brittle.
Survival Lily easily demonstrated that this knife isn't worth the money, and VG-10 is not a good choice of steel for a survival knife. She broke the tip off in about 30 seconds with just easy prying on an oak log. My $70 Buck Selkirk didn't lose the tip when I tried the same thing. I couldn't make it break no matter how hard I tried. It bent, but never broke.
kurt_mcdonaldThat was the S model. A smaller model.
I like her channel but it's ironic she chose a lesser stainless steel for her own model knife.
The reason hers might not chip out is all down to being softer. Fallkniven could as easily use a softer ht and achieve a "tough" knife but, like all things in knives, it's a trade off with edge retention.
Ultimately, there is no perfect one knife. Ask yourself what you want from the knife, then choose size, Geo, steel.
I bought an A1 model from amazon last year. I had a problem with the blade on my 3rd day of a 40+ day wilderness survival course. Contacted the company by email. They all but accused me of trying to pull a fast one over on them. Then accused me of abusing the knife (the "survival" knife). Then they asked for proof of purchase and said if the vendor was not on their tiny list of authorized dealers that they probably wouldnt honor the warranty. At which point I sent 1 final and unpleasant email to the company telling them what they can do with the remainder of their day and logged into amazon to purchase a Tops BoB knife for the rest of my course. The A1 felt much better in hand, but I could baton wood with my BoB without the edge bending. I could have just gotten a miserable employee cooresponding with me and my A1 couldve been an oddity defect (general consensus in camp was it was genuine vg10 since it didnt rust, but the heat treatment was off), regardless I wont spend another dollar on the company.
T222T222Similar thing happened to me but with an S1 on the first day using it. Genuine blade. Stuck the tip into a block of wood and the point shattered off. Clear dark line in the steel at the break. Their answer was to grind a new point millimeters shorter and hand it back. Didn’t even try to match the belly profile. My take, these blades are not worth the price with service like that.
ModestProposalIm glad I didnt bother sending them my blade then. I was so aggravated as their response I just got a new one and tossed it in storage. Well its a lesson learned. My TOPs and Esee blades are ugly compared to the A1, but I hear the customer service is outstanding. Fact is, after years, I still havent had a reason to contact them.
Well the SRK and A1 are virtually identical in size and profile, neither is dwarfed or out of class. Rock on if you’ve had good experience with Fallkniven’s laminated stuff, they have such a great reputation. But there are some awesome competitive/value options. The SRK is offered in a laminated stainless like the A1, too, btw. I believe the advantage of CPM-3V is better toughness than a VG-10 core, while still being semi-stainless; so at the same price as an A1, that might be a difficult trade off to decide on. Because that VG-10 edge will definitely chip in real use. After all, that’s the point of laminating softer steel, to get better overall resilience, otherwise the VG-10 alone would just crumble over time. That’s where I was commenting that I like the value of a less expensive carbon steel like SK-5. It’s not going to hold an edge as well as 3V or be rust resistant as VG-10, but it’s really tough and still easy to take care of. I’ve only used my SRK out on the farm and for backyard firewood, but it’s never chipped and just rips through wood forever. And personally I prefer sharpening dull and rolled edges like that - taking chips out of my VG-10 folders is a huge pain in the neck.
b.parker1218Here's a review of the A1 that compares to the SRK
https://bladereviews.com/fallkniven-a1-review/
The SRK "feels like a toy." This does not sound anything like "near identical" to me.
The A1 can chop, you cannot really chop with the SRK, this puts it in a separate class.
The SRK weighs 8oz,the A1 12oz. It's substancially larger... By a third. "Near identical"? I think not.
The Fallkniven S1 is much closer to the SRK.
As far as steel, yes 3 v is a better steel but steel is but a single factor in knife performance. Heat treat, geometry etc play significant roles.
Everyone raved about the convexed opposed to regular v edge. It's an important distinction that makes for better edge stability.
As I said in a comment below, knife choice should be decided on your personal needs. I bet most knife makers and experts would say a knife as beefy as the A1 does not need 3V,in fact very few people will ever come close to the limits of a 3V to really benefit from it.
The A1 has been around since the 90s, show me examples of this knife failing in all those years.
To dismiss it because of VG10 is just a bit ignorant, especially at this price.
**SIGNIFICANT**
Massdrop informed me (in Sept 2018) my Fallkniven A1 purchased on MD (Sept 2018) IS NOT warranted because it was purchased here on MD, and not an established knife store. : (
Although I know mine bought off MD is genuine, I'd like it warrantied should something happen.
Something to think about...
Is this VG-10 that Fallkneven uses a tough or brittle steel?
I know every manufacturer can have different heat treat methods & levels of hardness, so I guess what I'm asking is, how fragile is it to striking or shocks, like if I were to accidentally hit metal objects or drop it on my tile floor...
RHPICAYUNE59 hrc with a laminate for extra durability. Attached is a link to part 3 of a true abuse video of the A1. The video is horrifying to watch but also makes you love the knife so much more.
RHPICAYUNEThis is a tough knife. This is my buddies go to survival knife and he has literally used it to chop down trees. I have never seen this knife at this price. It's a good buy.
$186 at Amazon and delivered to my box in 2 day shipping with my prime account--no waiting weeks and weeks for the mass drop...$182 here at massdrop with the S&H; why only a $4 savings if a bunch of us will
RHPICAYUNEThanks for letting us know, we do check pricing but sometimes we don't spot every single competitor's best price.
Based on member comments, we've been able to make the lowest drop price even better - member research FTW!
BaccaBossMCIt's an excellent knife that will serve well in survival and bushcraft applications. It's generally regarded as one of the best survival knives you can get in stainless steel and in general. Fallknivens prices have steadily been increasing over the years. I would consider its current cost avg of about $200 for the A1 approaching the limit of its value, as Bark River makes a similar design and function with better steels and unconditional lifetime warranty at a slightly higher cost.
Massdrop, can you please allay my fears of having an unwarrantied knife?
I was worried about the warranty situation, so I reached out to FallKniven themselves to enquire about the warranty...
Who would I interact with in the U.S. should I need warranty or product assistance?
The following is my email to them...
Sept. 18, 2018
"Hello (FallKniven),
I am purchasing what is advertised as a genuine FallKniven A1z from a website called Massdrop.
I do not want to support counterfeiters or fakes from stealing your design and money.
I also appreciate and want a genuine FallKniven product.
Is Massdrop an authorized distributor or purchaser from you?
Here is a link to the product:
**(I inserted Massdrop's A1z knife URL here for Fallkniven to see) **
"Please let me know if this is legitimate and would carry warranty from you.
Thank you very much for your time."
*Following is FallKniven's reply to me Sept. 18, 2018 @ 10 am CST*
Hello, Since we aren’t members of this community we haven’t got access to the asking price level. We don’t sell to them and they are not authorized by us. I believe they buy our products from any of our three US distributors. We doubt that they will assist you if you happened to get any problems with your knife. We suggest that you buy our products from a regular dealer close to you or from a large, reliable internet dealer. Best regards Peter Hjortberger

I actually contacted Fallkniven. As long as the knife comes in their package and with their hologram emblem its covered; but just in case I suggest using your phone to scan the emblem (using directions provided in link below) to register the knife directly with Fallkniven.

here is a link.
This product also ships DIRECTLY from fallkniven. On their website they cover direct sales through themselves rather than through the retailer. Customer support got back to me in a timely fashion, about 8 hours which considering we are on opposite sides of the world is pretty good.
ZawakaThank you!
That is very good news as I didn't order previously on another drop due to worrying about this.
Massdrop really needs to post this as it is very pertinent having a valid warranty.
Sometimes it seems Massdrops information is kind of incomplete...
