I started my "grandfather" shaving experience with a less expensive double-edge safety razor and blades -- it was a good experience, but I was still prone to a lot more nicking and not quite as close a shave as I wanted. Then I heard about the Feather equipment, saw it, and decided to try it out. The difference was amazing! The Feather razor and Feather blades made for a much smoother shave, faster, with less nicks. I've been using this daily for months and still I am very happy, overall. There is a minor bit of rusting occurring inside where the blade sits, which is less than ideal, but otherwise I couldn't be happier. Definitely pair it with Feather blades as well --- they last a day longer than the cheaper brands and lead to a better shave overall, while still staying in the pennies per day range. I pair this with some Jack Black beard lube as a base lubricant layer, then some Proraso eucalyptus-menthol shaving cream frothed up with a badger brush in a bowl. To finish, the L'Occitane Cade balm. The ultimate grandfather shaving experience short of going to a straightedge!

I use it as my primary. I have two Gillette classic ones that I have used for years, and I consider myself a wet shaving semi-expert. I have wet-shaved for over 28 years... (God am I that old?) I used to use Super Blues when they were in production. I love Feather blades, and the As-D2 is just like their blades, precise, well made, and impressive. If you don’t like this razor, check your technique before you register a complaint on this tool.
Exfoliate, pre-shave oil, creme, brush, shave, rinse, alum, and lotion. No ingrowns and BBS on Mondays and smoother than your ex girlfriends new guy every other day!

Beautifully made, but the shave is not noticeably better than my Merkur. The head seems to be just a tad bigger than I'm use to, I notice it every time I use it. I prefer a shorter handle too but that's personal preference. I never liked the pot metal construction of the Merkur so I was really looking forward to the SS Feather but I would not rate this a better razor overall than the Merkur. If construction and quality of materials is important and you want a razor that will last you forever then you can't go wrong just don't think it's going to be a step up from other good razors at shaving your face.

Best DE razor I have used out of four others I own. Works well with their super sharp Feather blades to expose only the minimum necessary for a close shave. Wider head covers the ends of the blade to prevent accidental scrapes. Sharp knurling of the barrel helps to maintain your grip with soapy hands while shaving in the shower. Very well made solid stainless steel. Great price through Mass Drop. Would probably not have bought this one if not for Mass Drop, glad I did.

This is extremely well made and the craftsmanship is wonderful. It really has a great feel in the hand, is easy to use even with wet fingers, and looks like a work of art. Unfortunately, the razor is very "mild" in its shave, requiring lots of attention to technique and repeated passes to get a good clean shave. It really has a very narrow angle of cutting and works best with the Feather blades, which are a bit more expensive. This isn't bad, per se, but it does mean that shaving takes more time and I've never nicked myself with it. That said, I still prefer my Standard Razor all aluminum with Astra blades. This razor just isn't a good value in my opinion and I'm wishing I hadn't bought it.

i have the merkur 34c and thought I would give this a shot at three times the cost. While it is made really well it looks and feel just like the merkur. I actually like the shorter handle on the 34c as it is easier to move to get the perfect angle. However I do think the feather blades make a big difference in either razor. Not sure I would spend my money again on this one but it is nice to have.

- initial cost hurts a bit, but it is a lifetime item... - requires a much steeper angle than other DE razors like the Merkur HD, vintage Gilette Aristocrat - a noticeably closer shave than any of them - excellent match for Feather blades - even though it is a closer shave it feels safer, less likely to nick or scrape - stand is worth having

I was skeptic to drop this much on a 'hobby' that is supposed to be 'cheap'-er than cartridge. However, it is hard to put it in words how good this item is, and how much this increases the experience. wow !! simple wow !! Plus massdrop experience was lot better than other places.
This Razor is 100% Stainless Steel there will no flaking what so ever, I owned this AS-D2 Razor and as long as you clean it periodically it will continue to look as if you just purchased it.

saladito_29I also own many stainless razors including the Feather AS-D2, theRockwell 6s, the RazoRock Game Changer, Timeless scalloped Solid Bar, and Above The Tie Solid Bar. I also own razors of solid bronze (Timeless), solid aluminum (PAA), and gold-plated solid brass (Gillette). The Feather is a fine razor, but is inferior to almost all the others listed above. Try some other high quality razors before waxing rhapsodic about the utterly inefficient, overpriced Feather.

The best
I have too many razors to count (over 20), of different types and prices. This one is indeed the priciest, but also the best - the smoothest, and the best at holding the blade in place. The blades can be used for a longer time in this razor as they are held more rigidly (closer to their edge) in place.

Superb Razor
About a year ago I purchased a Feather AS-D2 on a drop and have used it since. I am normally a frugal guy but don't regret the purchase. I used a straight razor for a decade, but the AS-D2 is smooth and nick free like a Gillette Fusion at a fraction of the cost and I can get a very close shave almost like a straight razor at a fraction of the cost. I like the Kai blades. They are similar to the Feather blades but last longer and are a bit smoother with less nicks. As far as value goes, yes their are other great razors. I have an Edwin Jagger. It never gets used. Compared with the reusable plastic double edge razors made by Gillette and Lord that I used in the Philippines the Edwin Jagger is very expensive. They also work great when paired with a decent blade. They cost about 35 or 40 cents including a blade. The bonus is they are super fast to change the blade or clean. If ultimate frugal is your goal they can't be beat. If a fabulous piece of kit that gives smooth, close shaves (for many people) the Feather AS-D2 is tough to beat. For me the improvement in shave quality from the plastic Gillette to the Edwin Jagger is not as great as from the Edwin Jagger to the Feather AS-D2.
