Have just received a secondhand version of the original, and I really enjoy the lush midrange—wonder if it still present on the Purpleheart —from the description: The lower midrange is decreased by ~5 dB
I understand the above as they have turned down the midrange, but English is not my first language…

SchierbechThey didn't turn anything down. The only change driving the sonic differences are the wood cups.

JamesXHi James,
Yes but should it not be understood as the midrange is not so pronounced?

SchierbechYes, the midrange is less wide at both ends, but bass and treble are extended. The difference though is subtle (small).

iSaff5 dB is far from being a small difference, in fact it's huge. If it's really the case.

Pierre111Indeed, but Massdrop are apparently uncertain about the measurements given only one pair were tested, over a short period, with worn ear pads. Too many variables. All things considered, given the ear cups are the only differentiator, they ought to have rather similar sound signatures, with the purple hearts slightly more focused and clear, but also slightly less full bodied than the mahogany because of the reduced resonance of the wood. Only the most fastidious audiophile ought to hear a real difference.
