Fox Umbrellas, an English heritage brand, has been producing brollies and walking sticks since 1868. Among the first manufacturers using steel-tube ribs to support its canopies, Fox has earned a global following for its hand-assembled umbrellas Read More

After the success of the first couple of Fox Umbrella runs, we wanted to introduce this new model - an upgraded version of the company's automatic umbrella. This model uses the same premium polyester canopy that their higher range has, and has a higher level of finishing and handwork when compared to the regular automatic. The best part (to me), though, is the wonderful sound it makes as you open it - a small flick of the thumb results in a delightfully satisfying "thwuuuuump!" as the umbrella extends.

My Davek solo does. There are several other brands that do as well, a quick Google will bring up plenty.

Knirps make auto retracting models - you still have to fold them yourself

It's not the umbrella that counts, it's how one uses it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tukQDg22o9M

RayFI didn’t see the bulletproof option offered this drop. Is it too late to amend the drop?

Ok...I'm a little confused as to what I would actually be buying here.
The MSRP suggests that it's one of Fox's GT-series umbrellas with the Fox steel tube. However, from the specifications, it looks like Massdrop is actually offering the cheap GA-series "Fox" umbrella with a generic tube. In which case, the MSRP is not just misleading, but outright deceptive as the GA-series retails for roughly $111.
Care to clarify?

I'll try to reiterate and clear this up once and for all:
-both the GA and GT have steel tubes. The GA can't use the exact same tube as the GT because it uses a slightly larger octagonal tube shape that is required for the automatic opening mechanism. So in other words, they are not the same by necessity but they are both steel. -the one shown here uses the same canopy as the GT line, as mentioned. From the vendor: "This umbrella is different to the standard GA2 as it is made with our Best Polyester fabric which is superior fabric to our standard basic GA2. It also has the better quality finish and work." -the GT line is not automatic. This is the biggest difference between the GA and the GT, which you're not mentioning.
I hope that helps!
IanAndersonPerfect, thanks for the info. I'm in!

Fox umbrellas are hand-made in England. I absolutely love mine which isn't automatic. It has so far proven extremely durable, and is definitely standing the test of time. I bought mine with Massdrop and loved that it had a wood handle and wood accent at the tip with a metal ferrule on top. (this one is a bit different) I've had mine deployed in medium winds, and it feels solid and unlikely to break or invert. I spent the money because like Bombenhagel I got sick of spending ~$12 to $25 usd for an umbrella that would get bent or busted in average wind. Or would get lost when I forgot it.
If I had the money, I would easily buy this automatic version because mine is fully manual. If you have the money, this umbrella has been more than worth every cent I spent on it. It's stylish, and has proven to be a solid performer. Unlike cheaper ones, I never forget it, and I'm not afraid to open it when it's windy. kfox: It's made in England, so it's made for regular usage. It's built to be durable, not just to be cheap. I was glad to spend the money because I wanted something nice, that wouldn't take up a bunch of space in my car.

This is from the catalog on their website. I mean short of getting a copy of the shipping paperwork from Massdrop (international shipments require declarations of origin etc.) I don't know how better to confirm it.

flynhghrGotcha! Thank you! You'd think they might mention that on their own website.

If someone can justify why this umbrella costs so much, I'll buy it.
kfoxA little research reveals they are one of the best British-made umbrella companies. They've been making them since 1868 and are very well-reviewed by owners. Would probably be the last umbrella you'd ever need.

Aside from the long shipping time that others have mentioned, DHL is listing my shipment as "tendered to USPS" on May 2nd. They issued a tracking # for the USPS shipment, and USPS lists the order as having had its "pre-shipment info" sent on May 2nd, but no updates since then. I'm curious if my order is stuck in limbo, as DHL still lists my order having an estimated delivery of May 10th. Whether that is the case, I can't really tell, but it doesn't sit right that it should take over 14 days to receive a delivery. I'm pretty disappointed with this whole process after having had numerous orders work out fine in the past.

Are these umbrellas made in England? I believe Fox is now outsourcing some of its manufacturing to Asia.

I was disappointed in the smaller number of color choices this time around. Please consider adding back French Navy and tartan selections ?

Exact same issue with DHL & USPS - Item was originally scheduled to be delivered on 4/30 and now not found. I have contacted CS twice but no response. Long time lurker, first time customer. Do problems like this happen often?
