Did you get the adapters? If so, which tube seems to have better Bass response to you? The 6AQ5 has pretty good, IMHO, bass response for such a little tube! ;^)
New info, this little amp just went up in smoke. Turned it on and smoke came out from around the power tubes. Guess what, Drop will NOT give me any warranties on it even though I only got it in January of 2019. I’ll no longer buy from this company. They are on the ever growing list of companies that don’t know what customer service is. It’s more of let me get your money and kiss off
Not necessarily.
If you have any inclination to tinker, swapping the volume knob and the RLC filter on the headphone output really sounds amazing. My HD800s sound pretty damn good off of this.
rastusI have some Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV and Yugoslavia 6HM5 tubes that I may try. And currently in the Little Dot I have C3G tubes in adapters to the 5654 slots, so I'll give those a try as well. Definitely will take a look at those power tubes though.
Obviously this isn't a serious tube amp. You would need extraordinarily sensitive horn speakers or giant 15" full rangers used in vintage triode systems -- but if you had speakers like that you'd have a serious tube amp to go with them.
Usually I'd require replacing the switching power supply with a linear one, but the transformers are so low-end you might as well keep the wall wart.
GUTBThis could be a great amp for someone first getting into hifi. Get a used pair of old Cerwin Vegas and a three or four hundred dollar turntable and you could have a very nice sounding system for very little money.
This just looks awful. The machined parts don't fit together well. The photographer didn't even push the tubes all the way down, potentially creating a liability for the site when someone who doesn't know any better makes theirs look like the picture and then electrocutes themselves or burns something. And the specs tell us pretty much nothing, except that it doesn't have enough power for speakers. This is the worst drop I've seen in audio.
I do see now that the phono is MM level which is what I assumed. This unit is branded with several other names on various online markets. According to an Amazon listing it is described as "FX-Audio TUBE-P1 HIFI MCU Single Ended Classic A Desktop Power Tube Amplifier Headphone Amplifier" I assume they mean Class A rather than Classic A. If anyone can provide more info , please feel free.
EverlastingUpliftThe parts fit as they were designed to.
The specs are easily the most underrated specs I've ever seen. This amp puts out a TRUE 2.5W, and likely more, unlike the rest of the over spec'd items everywhere on the internet.
This amp is more than enough to power most speakers at very listenable levels. Especially if you have efficient speakers and/or drivers larger than 8".
One look at the reviews here is enough to convince me Massdrop and Drop are dead. Not even the autogenerated non-verified reviews on Amazon are as obviously fake and bought as these.
Anyone have any recommendations for a nicer set of tubes for this amp? My current setup is a APPJ PA1501A I love this amp but don’t have many tubes to choose from. I’m hoping this FX Audio amp will allow me to dive into sampling a variety of tubes and their accompanying sounds. I saw some tubes in the comments but I’m a bit clueless when it comes to choosing the proper ones. Any advice or references to help me in the future would be greatly appreciated!
So I have been waiting several weeks for my tubes to come in. I ordered several that you recommended from a supplier in Russia. Today they finally came in and I couldn’t wait to give them a listen. Popped the Voskhod 6ZH1P-EV into the 6J1 slots then added the adapters and Reflector Saratov 6P6S tubes into the 6P1 slots. Fired up the amp for things to warm up and a few seconds later I noticed this beautiful plasma looking glow coming from the left Voskhod tube. I was thinking to myself how awesome does that look I’ve never seen a tube look like that before. Then my excitement was crumbled by a snap crackle and pop that came from the left speaker followed by me ripping the power cord from the back of the amp as if it was going to explode. After looking more closely I noticed a small crack at the base of the tube and all of the internals seem to be leaning to one side. Do you think this was a shipping flaw, or possibly a tube installation flaw on my part? I now have the original Chinese tubes back in the 6J1 slots and everything seems to be working properly.
chance912Jesus, that's scary. Sorry that happened. It's very possible that it was a tube defect or damaged in shipping. An installation error shouldn't have caused that. Check with the vendor, maybe send a pic or two of the damaged tube and explain what happened. If they test their tubes before sending them, they should have no problem replacing it for you.
To the people who say this amp will only work with high efficiency speakers (IE large horn loaded speakers like some but not all Klipsch designs), I just want to point out that this depends on how you plan on using it.
Sound pressure levels increase by 6 dB with each halving of distance. Therefore a 99 dB sensitivity speaker at a 12 foot listening distance has the same perceived loudness as a 93 dB sensitivity speaker at 6 feet and a 87 dB sensitivity speaker at 3 feet. A 2.5 watt amp is not for floor parties unless you're using refrigerator-size Klipschorn speakers. But if you're powering desktop speakers that are 3 feet from your ears, then 2.5 watts will work fine with average 87 dB sensitivity speakers.
Another way of looking at is the relationship of amplifier power to listening distance. Obtaining the same sound pressure requires 1/4 the amplification with each halving of listening distance. So 40 watts at 12 feet is equivalent to 10 watts at 6 feet and 2.5 watts at 3 feet.
NaspYou can do that. However, unless you have an upgraded sound card, it won't sound too good. Your best bet is to also purchase a DAC so that you can go USB out instead of 3.5. There are plenty of choices that would fit your needs for under $100.
Naspif it's "line out", it should sound ok. Avoid actual headphone output, that will sound bad. And consider buying a USB DAC if you want it to sound better.
