Hopefully Invicta, who bought Glycine, is temporarily building brand awareness, but you might see this watch at Sam's club if they stay on this path--and devalue the Glycine brand completely. Hopefully someone who recognizes the cachet that Glycine carries is running the brand towards the future and not into the ground. This years version uses a lesser eta movement than years past...looks like it is going downhill in quality.
Watchguy12Hello Watchguy12:
Please note that the movement used in this watch is the same is previous versions GL293 which is a ETA Base 2893 Swiss Automatic GMT movement.
Thanks
Glycine-USAThank you for the links. What would you say to those of us that paid three times this for an airman vintage and now see this price? This devalues my watch by setting a precedent to the market. You allow timepiece.com to sell around this price every day. High end watches guard their brands' pricing and grow through intelligent marketing and strategic partnerships and not by trying to flood the market and take a lower margin. Shame on you, Invicta. I have been a brand loyalist to Glycine up until now. Omega, Breitling, Rolex will always exist at the high end because they take the opposite approach.
timegrownoldNor do I. But the mismanagement of a brand with a 100 year history is saddening to those that have supported it. The strategy to leverage cache into lower markets is unsustainable. Would the buyers who purchased this watch today for 600 be happy if it was 300 next year at a local Sam's club that sells Invicta already? How do you know that will not happen given the low margin warehouse stores take? This is a very real possibility that has been raised on other forums and nowhere has Invicta expressed intention to keep VALUE high. Where does the bleeding stop? This is a warning I wish I had gotten a few years ago. Take it or leave it.
Watchguy12Its funny you should mention Breitling in your post. I recommend you look up Sicura and Breitling history especially around 1978-1979 and you will see a number of similarities between Brietling and the current changes Glycine is going through with the Invicta company.
Watchguy12I don't know, I think the cheapest automatic movement watch with a sapphire case I've seen was a maratac drop for like $260, but it had a Miyota 9015 movement and was 46 mm diameter. I think producing a quality watch at 42 mm diameter with all of these features *plus* 24 dials, chronographs, etc in the $500-600 range is a great idea, since you can't find these things in that range. But then again , I don't mind shopping at Sams club either.
timegrownoldTruthfully I believe that watches are investments that, at this level of quality, should retain value. Given the changes in market strategy my investment in Glycine has not. Not many companies in any market change their value so starkly, like a car that drops it price to one third two years after you buy it, those that currently own an airman have a right to feel maligned. Thanks for your thoughts. All fair comments, sir.
Watchguy12I understand your worries about the Invicta purchase, your concern with regards to the price you've paid, etc...
This being said, regarding this drop, and still following your argument, it will be difficult to produce a watch with these specs and quality for cheaper than 600 USD, in one year or 5, that's cheaper than what I've paid my Seiko Sumo for. This drop looks really interesting to me, had I lived in the US, I'd have already joined it.

Indeed, some investments are better than others. Do not some Ferrari's decrease in value, while others increase? It doesn't mean you cannot enjoy driving your Ferrari 308 even though it is not as valuable as a Ferrari 250 GTO. In fact, you may enjoy it more because you don't have to worry about getting dirt on it. Enjoy your watches by wearing them; don't use them as a tool for speculation. There is also a "long game" to consider.
dpj1Fair point. I somewhat agree, and prefer putting miles on my '14 Porsche Cayman S...but still take my '92 911 turbo on track days and drive the hell out of it...time will tell, I suppose.
Watchguy12They may have gone up for now, and I know that they are fun to drive, but only if you're a hobbit. I only marginally fit into the driver's seat of a Cayman.
dpj1I'm a 6'5" ex D1 basketball and football player and the headroom is far exceeding any Ferrari that I have driven. Such statements bring your credibility into question.
Watchguy12Understood. I test drove one a few years ago, probably the original version, and I felt like I could not fit in the seat. Way too cramped. Not kidding.
Watchguy12No, the difference is easy to discern, yet in actual money, the difference is 2,000 USD on one hand, 1,100 on the other. If I had paid the extra 2,000 for the same Breitling, I doubt I would have claimed that "Breitling has strategies to retain the value of their watches", and I'd probably feel as pissed as you are today. That also, I discern! ;)
AleskbYour math is less than exacting, but take solace, as your pettiness is perfectly evident. Do you really need a congratulations that you find 40% the same as 78%? I tire of a conversation with such a child like mindset that is so desperate for validation. Enjoy your mental gymnastics, or what you refer to as discernment. My argument was clear. Do I need to point out that 40-50% is a normal massdrop discount? Please just discuss that within your unconsolidated self, I tire of you.
AleskbVitriol is not a component of psychoanalysis. Honesty, however indelicate, is. We often forget how we obviate ourselves within these sheltered internet personas. I wish you the best, sir, and hope you find fulfillment where you seek it.
