What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. If you're left with unanswered questions, you'll most likely find the info you're looking for in the original write-up. On my imaginary top list of the most useful keyboard features, tweaks and hacks, SpaceFN would deserve a podium finish for sure. But what makes it so special? In short: SpaceFN is easy to implement, easy to learn, costs nothing, can be used with any keyboard, and can improve your productivity instantly. Regarding your question you should try as many different mks as possible at friends, mall, meetups ... . You've to decide which switch you prefer for your first one, don't settle without trying, don't listen to others, it's a personal decision, my dream might be your nightmare. A budget to know would be nice then, programmability ... is needed or not. What do you find pleasing your eyes in style, color ... https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/ for looking. So many variables, the more infotmation you can give what you want or not, the better the given ideas should be.
Have fun, your journey has just begun, someone buying keycaps first without having a mk, please let me know in two or three years how many mks you possess :)
jokes aside, I'm using a Novatouch myself with Granite R4 and will switch out to "Carbon"touch when I receive this set. btw what do you think is better for topre-mx compatible, GMK or SP SA?
SA sounds and feels good for me, but having in mind that i just sold my SA sets, sticking to Cherry profile and DSA, the answer should be clear regarding my taste, which doesn't have to match yours.
