Man, I love Gregory backpacks. You cannot find anything better for comfort and design. Not the lightest packs on the market, but as long as you’re not an Ultra-lighter, you won’t mind.

AmericanIcon...or you don't have to carry it up/down steep descents ;-)

ozedudeTrue in theory but unless you literally count ounces (which many do) you would never notice the difference. In fact, I could argue this pack would be more comfortable for ascents/descents than a lighter pack which would definitely have an inferior suspension system.

pjwinnTrue in practice actually, for me at least. Using one and later a similarly weighted/designed pack from REI. I can tell you that in steep ascents and descents, weight and weight distribution is critical in avoiding injury.

ozedudeI guess I was trying to make the point of weight distribution. If you have a pack that distributes weight very well (which I think this pack does) and compared it to a lighter pack that struggles to do as well - at least with heavier loads for week+ trips like I do - having the more capable (heavier pack) can pay off. No argument at all to what you have said. I just know most of the flash-type packs really have a hard time as pack weight goes up. I'm a fan of a full-featured pack for the kind of backpacking I do. Thanks @ozedude .
